A system for handling shipping containers includes first and second lifting beams and first and second holding beams. The system further includes a plurality of vertical beams wherein the plurality of vertical beams support the first and second lifting beams and the first and second holding beams. In the system, first and second pluralities of lifting shoes are disposed respectively on each of the first and second lifting beams while first and second pluralities of holding shoes are disposed respectively on each of the first and second holding beams. The system also has a hoisting mechanism that raises and lowers the first and second lifting beams, and the first and second lifting beams, the first and second holding beams, the plurality of vertical beams, and the hoisting mechanism are arranged to form a lift beam system.

Port lift beam system

A method for storing an empty trailer chassis includes positioning a trailer chassis between a first and a second vertical storage rack and lowering first and second stabilizing beams along the vertical storage racks toward the trailer chassis. The first and second stabilizing-beam trolleys are attached to the respective first and second stabilizing beams and a spreader extends between the first and second stabilizing-beam trolleys. The spreader contains a chassis clamping mechanism that forms a downward-facing portion of the spreader. The chassis clamping mechanism is disposed below the first and second stabilizing beams. The method further includes engaging the trailer chassis with the chassis clamping mechanism. The first and second stabilizing beams are above the trailer chassis when the chassis-clamping mechanism has engaged the trailer chassis.

Chassis stacker

A method () for handling chassis is disclosed. The method () can include: providing () a multi-level structure including a plurality of levels including a first level with an opening to receive a chassis and a second level; locating () a plurality of shelves adjacent to the opening including a port shelf and a starboard shelf, each configured to receive a chassis; and providing () an transfer mechanism configured to pick a chassis and place it on one of the plurality of shelves. The method allows compact storage, stacking and retrieving and inventorying of chassis, for enhanced logistics.

System and method of handling chassis

A chassis stacker having a first and a second vertical storage rack displaced from one another by a distance wide enough to accommodate a trailer chassis, and connected at a top end by a trolley rail support beam. A trolley is positioned on the trolley rail support beam, said trolley having an elevation system capable of raising and lowering a first and a second stabilizing beam that are suspended from the trolley and guided in their vertical motion by low-friction, storage-rack contact members attached at respective first and second ends of the elevating structure, said contact members in contact with an inner surface of the respective first and second vertical storage racks. A first and a second stabilizing-beam trolley is attached to the, respective, first and second stabilizing beams while a spreader containing a chassis-clamping mechanism extends between and attaches to the first and the second stabilizing beam trolley.

A method () for handling a container is disclosed. It can include the steps of: providing () a multi-level structure () including a plurality of levels () including a first level () with an opening () to receive a container () and a second level (); locating () a plurality of shelves () adjacent to the opening () including a port shelf () and a starboard shelf (), each configured to receive a container (); and providing () a transfer mechanism () configured to pick a container () and place it on one of the plurality of shelves (). Advantageously, the method () provides enhanced container handling and logistics, and has wide use cases in warehousing, assembly manufacturing, ports and distribution hubs.

System and method of handling containers

A universal system and method for handling a container is disclosed. The system can include: a support structure () defining a bay (), the support structure () including support shoes configured to support a container; a sensor () for determining a length of a container in the bay; and a controller () configured to operate the support structure () including a storage mode and a retrieval mode.

Universal system and method of handling a container

A distribution system () is disclosed. The system includes the steps of: providing () a multi-level pathfinder with a containment cavity having a ground level cell and an elevated level cell; configuring () the containment cavity to receive containers; and loading () the containment cavity with a first container and moving the first container vertically to allow a second loading of a second container. This system provides a simple, robust and efficient automatable buffer to load and unload, a container between a chassis and rail or port terminal and/or at distribution hub.

Distribution system

A lifting system for a vertically-elevating cab, the lifting system includes a frame assembly having a first and a second support column, first and a second lift screws which are attached to the, respective, first and second support columns, a cab-lifting beam that has a first and a second end attached to the, respective, first and second lift screws. A vertically-elevating cab is mounted on the cab-lifting beam in such a manner that a center of gravity of the cab is not aligned with a center of the cab-lifting beam. A plurality of rollers are located on each end of the lifting beam. Each one of the plurality of rollers is in contact with a guide bar on each of the respective first and second support columns, and a first and a second power system is connected to the, respective, first and second lift screw.

Screw-driven vertically-elevating cab

A trolley control system for a gantry crane having a multiple trolley arrangement such as a first and second trolley. The control system including a trolley beam connected to the gantry crane with a first and second drive device connected to the trolley beam. The first drive device is powered by a first drive system while the second drive device can be powered by either the first drive system or the second drive system. A first trolley is connected to the first drive device while a second trolley is connected to the second drive device.

A control system and method for obtaining power on demand from a diesel engine in order to operate vehicle functions and accessories. The method comprised of: (1) determining a flow rate necessary to operate each of a plurality of function hydraulic pumps and an vehicle drive pump associated with the engine; (2) comparing the flow rates of the various hydraulic pumps to determine the greatest flow rate; (3) establishing an engine speed necessary to deliver the greatest flow rate; (4) comparing the engine speed necessary to deliver the greatest flow rate with a current engine speed; and (5) adjusting the current engine speed to provide the greatest flow rate required.

Method of obtaining required power on demand from an engine

A device for lifting oversized pieces of material. The device includes a spreader bar capable of attaching to a lifting vehicle. At least two cross members are attached to the spreader bar along with at least one cross-member power source. The at least one cross-member power source is connected to at least one drive mechanism which in turn is connected to at least one of the at least two cross members. A load-pick power source is attached to each of the at least two cross members and well as to at least one load-pick drive mechanism. The at least one load-pick drive mechanism is connected to each of the at least two load pick points, and the cross-member and the load-pick power sources are each electrically connected to an operating or control panel in a cab of the lifting vehicle.

Automatic adjustable spreader bar

In an embodiment, a crane including a hoisting (i.e., load-lifting) mechanism is provided with a variable-speed load-dependent control system and method for operating functions of the crane. An exemplary control system includes an actuator subsystem for performing at least one function of the crane, a sensor for detecting the magnitude of the load lifted by the hoisting mechanism and a controller that communicates with the sensor, wherein, relative to a load signal from the sensor, the controller transmits a speed signal to vary an operating speed of at least one actuator of the actuator subsystem.

Variable-speed load-dependent drive and hoist system

A sway dampener is provided for reducing sway motion of a gantry crane spreader that is suspended from hanger chains. The sway dampener is configured to resist motion of the hanger chain relative to the spreader, thereby retarding sway. The dampener includes first and second portions that are movable relative to each other in a resistive fashion, for example a piston-cylinder structure. The first portion is mounted to the spreader and the second portion is mounted to the hanger chain at an attachment point located a vertical distance above a point at which the hanger chain is pivotally mounted to the spreader so that horizontal sway motion of the attachment point relative to the spreader displaces the first and second portions.

Hanger chain anti-sway device for gantry crane

A gantry crane including a lifting grappler is provided with a hoist locking mechanism to prevent undesired downward drifting of the grappler, especially during periods when the crane is parked and not in operation. The hoist locking device can selectively secure the grappler in a raised position, maintaining a maximum clearance under the raised grappler. The crane includes a hoist line, such as a chain or cable, that suspendably supports the weight of the grappler, and a hoist actuator for moving the hoist line, thereby lifting or lowering the grappler. In an embodiment, the hoist locking device is selectively operable to secure the hoist line in a predetermined position, preventing the grappler from lowering. For example, an embodiment of the hoist locking device includes a hook-shaped latch member movably mounted to the frame for engagement with a catch member fixed relative to the hoist line. The catch member may, for example, be a projection from a clevis mounted to the hoist actuator. A latching actuator is provided for driving the hook between engaged and disengaged positions.

Hoist system anti-drift device

A steering apparatus and method are provided for a gantry crane with four corner-mounted wheel assemblies having steerable wheels. The crane is a type which drivable in either longitudinal or transverse directions, wherein steering control is automatically switched steering control to the &ldquo;leading&rdquo; wheels, or more particularly the wheels of the &ldquo;leading&rdquo; pair of wheel assemblies. The system detects which two of the wheel assemblies are leading, whether the crane is moving longitudinally frontwardly or rearwardly, or transversly rightward or leftward. The system includes a steering controller which controls steering actuators in such a manner that the wheels of the then-leading wheel assemblies are moved according to steering control input, while the wheels of a remaining pair of then-&ldquo;trailing&rdquo; wheel assemblies are moved to and/or held in, a straight alignment.
