A binder resin composition comprising polyvinyl pyrrolidone-polyvinyl acetate block copolymer (PVP-co-PVAc). When introducing the binder resin composition to the porous coating layer of a separator for an electrochemical device, there an effect of significantly improving binding characteristics and heat resistance/safety.

A separator and an electrochemical device including the same. The separator includes an adhesive layer including first adhesive resin particles having an average particle diameter corresponding to 0.8-3 times of an average particle diameter of the inorganic particles and second adhesive resin particles having an average particle diameter corresponding to 0.2-0.6 times of the average particle diameter of the inorganic particles, wherein the first adhesive resin particles are present in an amount of 30-90 wt % based on a total weight of the first adhesive resin particles and the second adhesive resin particles. The separator shows improved adhesion to an electrode and provides an electrochemical device with decreased increment in resistance after lamination with an electrode.

A separator for an electrochemical device. The separator includes a porous coating layer formed from an acid, which is crosslinkable. As a result, the separator has increased heat resistance, safety and physical strength, shows improved peel strength between the porous substrate and the porous coating layer, and prevents separation of the inorganic particles from the porous coating layer. In addition, the separator shows an improved crosslinking degree so that the added amount of a crosslinkable binder resin may be reduced. Thus, it is possible to increase the added amount of a non-crosslinkable resin, inorganic particles, or both. Even when using a small amount of a crosslinkable binder resin, it is possible to provide both an effect of improving heat resistance and an effect of improving adhesion.

The separator shows improved adhesion between an electrode and the separator, maintains the pores of the adhesive layer even after a process of electrode lamination, and improves the resistance of an electrochemical device.

According to the present disclosure, it is possible to provide a separator having a uniform surface and showing improved adhesion.

A method for manufacturing a separator, including the steps of: (S) preparing a dispersion containing inorganic particles dispersed in a first solvent and a first binder polymer dissolved in the first solvent; (S) preparing a binder polymer solution containing a second binder polymer dissolved in a second solvent, and mixing the binder polymer solution with the dispersion so that a combined weight of the inorganic particles and the first binder polymer in the dispersion may be 1.5-8 times of a weight of the second binder polymer in the binder polymer solution; and (S) applying the resultant mixture to at least one surface of a porous polymer substrate, followed by drying, to form a porous coating layer on the porous polymer substrate. Disclosed is an electrode assembly including two electrodes having polarities opposite to each other, and a separator interposed between the two electrodes, wherein the separator includes: a separator base which includes a porous polymer substrate having a plurality of pores, and a porous coating layer; and an adhesive layer formed on at least one surface of the separator base, provided to face either of the electrodes and containing an adhesive resin, and wherein the adhesion (Peel Strength) between the porous polymer substrate and the porous coating layer and the adhesion (Lami Strength) between the adhesive layer and the electrode satisfy Mathematical Formula 1. An electrochemical device including the separator is also disclosed. In the electrode assembly, the separator shows increased resistance against scratching and the adhesion between the separator and the electrode can be improved.
