A multifunction device for selective application to the body of a vertebrate is disclosed. The device includes an electromagnetic generator supported by an bobbin like member which has a bore therethrough for reciprocally receiving an elongated magnetizable member. A permanent magnet is disposed near one end of the bore. The magnetic poles of the permanent magnet are arranged to magnetically attract the elongated magnetizable member. When energized, the electromagnetic generator produces a magnetic field magnetically polarizing the elongated magnetizable member establishing a repelling magnetic force with the permanent magnet which is additive to the electromagnetic force caused by the electromagnetic generator moving the elongated magnetizable member away from the permanent magnet.

Electromagnetic device, method and apparatus for selective application to vertebrates

A bearing detection system for an electrical generator (10) includes auxiliary bearings (29) for supporting a rotating shaft (39) upon failure of main bearings (62). The auxiliary bearings (29) are mounted on the shaft and have a slight gap (64) between their outside diameters and bearing liners 33. The gap corresponds to the main bearing permissible wear. During normal functioning of the main bearing, the auxiliary bearing frame (34) rotates with the shaft and a magnet (35) with a small clearance between its face and auxiliary bearing outer ring (32) forces the synchronized rotation of inner (37) and outer (32) races. The auxiliary bearing outer ring or race (32) has a coaxial groove (31) on its outer diameter and a detection sensor (30), mounted on the bearing liner, gives a signal per rotation of the shaft to a control circuit (40). The control circuit (40) determines the rotational status of the auxiliary bearings outer ring (32) by counting the number of impulses generated by the circuit (40) when the groove crosses the sensor's magnetic fields. The circuit (40) detects the moment when any auxiliary bearing comes in contact with the bearing liner and results in no impulses being generated. The outer ring (32) stops rotating as the main bearing wear depth reaches the predetermined limit. In this case, the circuit (40) triggers the failure signal (71) to indicate that the main bearings need replacement.

A broad range of brightness in a fluorescent lamp may be achieved by applying low-frequency, pulse-width modulated voltage or current to the lamp for a low level of brightness, or high-frequency voltage or current for a high level of brightness. Switching is provided to select between the two signals.

In an illustrative embodiment, a power converter for starting an AC machine comprises at least one transformer for stepping-up AC source voltages, at least one rectifier for rectifying output voltages from the at least one transformer, a three phase inverter for inverting rectified voltages from the at least one rectifier for providing three phase voltages for starting the AC machine, and a DC to AC converter for converting DC source voltage to AC inverted voltages. The three phase voltages for starting the AC machine are derived from one of the AC and DC source voltages through the at least one transformer and the at least one rectifier.

A turbine engine start system accepts either AC or DC and performs power conversion for multiple functions such as starting an AC synchronous generator as a synchronous motor without degradation of input power quality and with minimal generation of EMI. The system utilizes common magnetic components and common semiconductor transistors and rectifiers within its four major subcircuits. The four major subcircuits include a transformer rectifier, a boost converter, a voltage source inverter and a field excitation controller.

The converter's magnetic components, as well as several of its semiconductor rectifiers, perform dual functions (one in the step-up mode, and another in the step-down mode), which serves to minimize the total component count, and allows the converter to be both compact and lightweight. Additionally, as the converter maintains a continuous input current during voltage step-up conversion, the generation of signals which might cause electromagnetic interference is reduced.
