Hydroxy-functional polyethers having a 'cardo' diphenylene group in their backbones are prepared by contacting at least one dinucleophilic monomer with at least one dtglycidyl ether of a cardo bisphenol, such as bis(hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, phenolphthalein, or phenolphthalimidine or a substituted cardo bisphenol, such as a substituted bis(hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, a substituted phenolphthalein or a substituted phenolphthalimidine, under conditions sufficient to cause the nucleophillo moieties of the dinucleophilic monomer to react with epoxy moieties to form a polymer backbone containing pendant hydroxy moieties and ether, imino, amino, sulfonamido or ester linkages. These polyethers possess a combination of high barrier to oxygen transmission (i.e., oxygen transmission rate less than 10.0 cm.sup.3 -mil/100 in.sup.2 -atm-day to oxygen) and high heat resistance (i.e., Tg above 120.degree. C.). These polyethers are suitable for use in the manufacture of retort-sterilizable packaging materials exhibiting high barrier to oxygen.

Heat-resistant hydroxy-functional polyethers as thermoplastic barrier

Hydroxy-functional polyethers having a 'cardo' diphenylene group in their backbones are prepared by contacting at least one dinucleophilic monomer with at least one diglycidyl ether of a cardo bisphenol, such as bis(hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, phenolphthalein, or phenolphthalimidine or a substituted cardo bisphenol, such as a substituted bis(hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, a substituted phenolphthalein or a substituted phenolphthalimidine, under conditions sufficient to cause the nucleophilic moieties of the dinucleophilic monomer to react with epoxy moieties to form a polymer backbone containing pendant hydroxy moieties and ether, imino, amino, sulfonamido or ester linkages. These polyethers possess a combination of high barrier to oxygen transmission (i.e., oxygen transmission rate less than 10.0 cm.sup.3 -mil/100 in.sup.2 -atm-day to oxygen) and high heat resistance (i.e., Tg above 120.degree. C.). These polyethers are suitable for use in the manufacture of retort-sterilizable packaging materials exhibiting high barrier to oxygen.

Monomeric bisimides corresponding to the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is independently in each occurrence hydrogen, alkyl of from 1 to 20 carbons, aralkyl of from 1 to 20 carbons, halogen, or NO.sub.2 ; X' is F, Cl, OH, or NO.sub.2. These bisimides are useful in the production of various thermoplastic, polymeric materials such as polyetherimides, polyesterimides, and poly(carbonate imides).

Novel monomeric bisimides corresponding to the above formula are also disclosed.

Fluorene based bisimides and thermoplastic polymers thereof

A process for the preparation of bishydroxy aromatic compounds, such as 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene, involving contacting a ketone, such as fluorenone, with phenol or substituted phenol in the presence of a mercaptan cocatalyst and a solid superacid catalyst of Hammett acid strength H.sub.0 greater than about -13.0. Solid superacid catalysts include the sulfates, sulfated oxides, sulfated oxyhydroxides, and sulfated oxysilicates of aluminum, tin, and the Group IVA metals, such as zirconium, as well as mixed metal oxides, such as tungsten-zirconium oxides. Isolated yields are high for 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene.

Process for the preparation of bishydroxy aromatic compounds

The present invention relates to nonlinear optical materials comprising aminoaryl hydrazones and to nonlinear optical polymeric compositions containing recurring covalently bonded moieties derived from the aminoaryl hydrazones of the invention. The polymeric compositions of the present invention have high glass transition temperatures and exhibit stable nonlinear optical activity at high temperatures over a period of time.

A cyclophosphazene fluid composition containing organometallic or inorganic metal salts as antioxidants the antioxidants for use therein, and a method therefor, are disclosed herein. Suitable organometallic salts are formed by reacting a metal hydroxide with benzoic acid, substituted benzoic acids, or substituted phenols. The preferred inorganic metal salts effective for this purpose include various metal borates. The metal salt antioxidants are effective for reducing oxidation in the cyclophosphazene fluid in amounts of less than about 1% by weight of the overall composition.

Azole rings, such as oxazole and thiazole rings, can activate an aromatic ring bonded to a leaving group such as a halogen atom so that the aromatic ring will undergo aromatic nucleophilic substitution. The reaction is useful for making ethers, thioethers and amines containing azole rings. In particular, monomers having azole rings, activated aromatic rings with leaving groups and nucleophilic moieties can react under conditions of aromatic nucleophilic displacement to form non-rigid rod PBZ polymers. The non-rigid rod PBZ polymers can be used to form molecular composites with rigid rod PBZ polymers which molecular composites are not substantially phase separated.

The present invention relates to nonlinear optical material comprising nonlinear optical dihydroxy arylhydrazones and to nonlinear optical materials comprising compositions containing at least one divalent moiety of nonlinear optical arylhydrazones. The present invention also relates to polyesters, polyestercarbonates, polycarbonates, polyethers, and poly(hydroxy ether) polymers, incorporating the dihydroxy arylhydrazone as recurring divalent moieties in the backbone of the polymer. The polymeric compositions of the present invention have high glass transition temperatures and exhibit stable nonlinear optical activity at high temperatures over a period of time.

Azole rings, such as oxazole and thiazole rings, can activate an aromatic ring bonded to a leaving group such as a halogen atom so that the aromatic ring will undergo aromatic nucleophilic substitution. The reaction is useful for making ethers, thioethers and amines containing azole rings. In particular, monomers having azole rings, activated aromatic rings with leaving groups and nucleophilic moieties can react under conditions of aromatic nucleophilic displacement to form non-rigid rob PBZ polymers. Nucleophilic displacement method for synthesis of non-rigid PBZ polymers

This invention relates to a solvent process for the conversion of aromatic propargyl ethers into chromenes. The process can be catalyzed with copper or zinc salts. The preferred salt is cuprous chloride. The most preferred solvent is a dichlorobenzene. The invention also relates to chromene products formed using the process and to the polymerization of that chromene product and its polymerized product, the latter product having substantially improved flexural modulus and flexural strength properties. The polymerized product is also moisture insensitive.
