In various embodiments, methods, systems, and vehicles are provided for determining a fault in a suspension system of a vehicle. In an exemplary embodiment, sensor data is obtained via one or more vehicle sensors during operation of the vehicle; a one or more first coefficients for the vehicle are calculated via a processor using a pitch model with the sensor data; one or more second coefficients for the vehicle are calculated via the processor using a roll model with the sensor data; and a fault in the suspension system is determined via the processor using the first coefficients and the second coefficients.

Suspension fault diagnostics and prognostics using pitch and roll model

A method of identifying a fault in a friction brake actuated by hydraulic brake pressure and configured to decelerate a vehicle road wheel includes detecting, via a first sensor, a vibration at the road wheel and communicating data indicative of the detected vibration to a controller. The method additionally includes detecting, via a second sensor, upon application of the hydraulic brake pressure, a hydraulic brake pressure variation and communicating data indicative of the detected hydraulic brake pressure variation. The method additionally includes comparing, via the controller, the data indicative of the detected vibration with a threshold vibration value and the data indicative of the detected hydraulic brake pressure variation with a threshold hydraulic brake pressure value. Furthermore, the method includes generating a sensory signal indicative of the brake fault when magnitudes of the detected vibration and the detected hydraulic brake pressure variation are greater than their respective threshold values.

Detection of a friction brake fault

An electric drive system of a vehicle comprises a motor, a position sensor, an inverter, sensors to sense current and voltage supplied to the motor, and a controller to control the motor by controlling the inverter based on data from the position sensor and the sensors and a torque command. The controller estimates a motor torque using a motor model, calculates the motor torque, and generates a first state of health for the electric drive system based on a difference between the estimated and calculated motor torques. The controller generates, in response to the first state of health being less than or equal to a first threshold, a second state of health for at least one of the position sensor, the sensors, and the motor, and determines whether one of the position sensor, the sensors, and the motor is faulty based on the first and second states of health.

Integrated fault isolation and prognosis system for electric drive system

A machine bearing disposed on a rotatable member, such as may be present on a vehicle, is described. A method for monitoring a state of health of the machine bearing includes monitoring, via a microphone, an acoustic signal, and coincidently determining a rotational speed of the rotatable member associated with the machine bearing. The sound spectrum is correlated to the rotational speed of the rotating member, and a time-frequency analysis is executed to determine a sound spectrum. The sound spectrum is transformed to a residual spectrum. A first feature associated with a first frequency band and a second feature associated with a second frequency band are extracted from the residual spectrum. The state of health associated with the machine bearing is detected based upon the first and second features, and is communicated to a second controller.

Method and apparatus for monitoring a machine bearing on-vehicle

An apparatus and method that detect a condition of a vehicle component are provided. The method includes diagnosing vehicle health of a vehicle by analyzing one or more from among vehicle performance, vehicle energy usage, and vehicle vibration and acoustics, performing fault isolation on the vehicle to detect a health condition of a vehicle component corresponding to the isolated fault if the vehicle health below a predetermined threshold, monitoring the vehicle component corresponding to the isolated fault and estimating a remaining useful life of the vehicle component corresponding to the isolated fault, and performing one or more from among continuously monitoring, scheduling maintenance, providing a warning, and performing fault mitigation based on the estimated remaining useful life of the vehicle component corresponding to the isolated fault.

Apparatus and method that diagnose vehicle health condition

An electric machine assembly having an electric machine and a controller-based method for isolating a particular fault condition in the electric machine. A plurality of current sensors is configured to output respective measured currents in respective phases of the electric machine. A position sensor is configured to output a rotor position of the electric machine. A controller is configured to group the respective measured currents into respective combinations of two. The controller is configured to calculate respective residual factors (R), and a global residual factor (G) based on the respective residual factors (R). Responsive to at least three of the global residual factor (G) and the respective residual factors (R) exceeding respective calibrated error thresholds, the controller is configured to identify a particular fault condition from among a plurality of possible fault conditions and execute a control action with respect to the electric machine.

Isolation of particular fault conditions in an electric machine assembly

A system and method for determining when to reset a controller in response to a bus off state. The method includes determining that the controller has entered a first bus off state and immediately resetting the controller. The method further includes setting a reset timer in response to the controller being reset, determining whether the controller has entered a subsequent bus off state, and determining whether a reset time. The method immediately resets the controller in response to the subsequent bus off state if the reset time is greater than the first predetermined time interval, and resets the controller in response to the subsequent bus off state after a second predetermined time interval has elapsed if the reset time is less than the first predetermined time interval.

Approach for controller area network bus off handling

A method includes recording a current performance signature for first and second components in a system, recording a calibrated baseline performance signature for the components, and processing the performance signatures through an aging model to determine a future performance signature for each component. The future performance signatures are processed through a system function model to determine the state of function of the system for each possible repair case. A cost-optimal repair case is then determined from among the possible repair cases, and recorded in memory. An apparatus includes first and second components of a system, and a host machine configured for processing the current and baseline performance signatures through the aging and system function models as noted above. The cost-optimal repair case is determined from among all possible repair cases, and then recorded in memory. An example system may be a cranking system with a starter motor and battery.

Cost-optimized model-based extension of system life

Methods and systems are provided for vehicular communications. The systems include a server and a controller in a vehicle. The controller is configured to receive data from vehicular components and transmit the data to the remote server. In a normal mode, the data is transmitted in accordance with a normal frequency of events, while in an abnormal mode, the data is transmitted in accordance with an abnormal frequency of events. The abnormal frequency is different from the normal frequency. The abnormal mode is set in response to an event trigger denoting a fault of at least one component.

Method and system for vehicular data collection

A method of diagnosing a fault in an in-vehicle communication system. The in-vehicle communication system includes a transmitting node, at least one receiving node, and a network communication bus coupling the transmitting node to the at least one receiving node. A message is transmitted from the transmitting node to the at least one receiving node over the communication bus. A fault detection technique is applied within the transmitting node for detecting a fault within the transmitting node. A fault detection technique is applied to the at least one receiving node for detecting a fault within the at least one receiving node. A fault detection technique is applied within the network communication bus for detecting a fault within the communication bus. An analyzer collectively analyzes results from each respective detection technique for isolating a fault within the in-vehicle communication system.

Integrated fault diagnosis and prognosis for in-vehicle communications

A method and system for estimating the state of health of an object sensing fusion system. Target data from a vision system and a radar system, which are used by an object sensing fusion system, are also stored in a context queue. The context queue maintains the vision and radar target data for a sequence of many frames covering a sliding window of time. The target data from the context queue are used to compute matching scores, which are indicative of how well vision targets correlate with radar targets, and vice versa. The matching scores are computed within individual frames of vision and radar data, and across a sequence of multiple frames. The matching scores are used to assess the state of health of the object sensing fusion system. If the fusion system state of health is below a certain threshold, one or more faulty sensors are identified.

Method and apparatus for state of health estimation of object sensing fusion system

An embodiment contemplates a method of determining a state-of-charge of a battery for a vehicle. (a) An OCV is measured for a current vehicle ignition startup after ignition off for at least eight hours. (b) An SOCis determined for the current vehicle ignition startup. (c) An SOCis determined for a current vehicle ignition startup. (d) A determination is made whether the difference in the SOCfor the current startup and the SOCfor the current startup is less than a predefined error bound using. Steps (a)-(d) is performed in response to the difference being greater than the predefined error; otherwise, determining an ignition-off current for the current vehicle ignition startup as a function of the SOCof the current vehicle ignition startup and previous vehicle ignition startup, and a SOC based on current integration over time. Determining an SOCof the current vehicle ignition startup using the processor.

Battery SOC estimation with automatic correction

A controller area network (CAN) has a plurality of CAN elements including a communication bus and controllers. A method for monitoring the CAN includes identifying each of the controllers as one of an active controller and an inactive controller. A fault-active controller isolation process is executed to detect and isolate presence of a fault-active controller. A fault isolation process can be executed to detect and isolate presence of one of a wire open fault, a wire short fault and a controller fault when one of the controllers is identified as an inactive controller. Presence of a fault associated with a persistent bus disturbance in the CAN is detected when a bus error count is greater than a predetermined threshold continuously for a predetermined period of time.

Method and apparatus for isolating a fault in a controller area network

A system and method for determining the speed of an alternator, for example, a vehicle alternator. The method includes measuring the current or voltage of a vehicle battery for a predetermined period of time, and then notch filtering the measured current or voltage signal to remove known harmonics. A limited data point Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) spectrum analysis operation is performed to identify the frequency peaks in the filtered signal, where the highest peak represents a ripple current on the DC alternator signal. The highest peak in the FFT signal is identified, and an interpolation process is performed between that peak and an adjacent peak in the data to identify the actual frequency of the ripple current. The ripple current is then converted to the speed of the alternator.

Alternator speed estimation using spectrum analysis

A method includes collecting state of health (SOH) data and usage data from a plurality of vehicles. A peer group is identified among the vehicles. A vehicle health prognosis is generated for each vehicle of the peer based on the collected SOH and usage data. The vehicles of the peer group are ranked based on the generated vehicle health prognosis and the rank is reported to an output device that is associated with each vehicle or with a user of each vehicle. If evaluation of the ranking indicates that the health prognosis of a vehicle of the peer group is improvable by modifying vehicle usage, an alert is issued to a user of that vehicle.
