Systems and methods are described for generating and implementing return-link satellite communications using a novel 1+N-ary constellation. The 1+N-ary constellation arranges M (e.g., 8) constellation points in a novel formation that increases their distances from each other relative to conventional M-ary modulation schemes by locating an inner constellation point centrally with respect to an I-Q plane and distributing the remaining N (i.e., M=N+1) outer constellation points radially around the inner constellation point. 1+N amplitude and phase-shift keying (APSK) modulation can be used to map symbols to the constellation. Embodiments combine the 1+N APSK modulation with additional features, such as non-Nyquist partial response (NNPR) filtering and/or state of the art low-density parity check (LDPC) coding.

Satellite return link communications using 1+N-ary signal constellation

Communication terminals, systems and methods are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, a method for improving communication throughput when experiencing periodic blockages includes generating at least one outer code block including a plurality of sync data elements, writing the sync data elements from the at least one outer code block to a same column of at least one interleaver including a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns, and writing additional data elements from the outer code block to other columns of the at least one interleaver.

Systems and methods for improving communication throughput

A system and method for recovering from communication interruptions by a periodic blockage. This is achieved by selecting an inner code block rate that supports a Packet Error Ratio (PER) equal to or greater than a target PER during the blockage. An expected number of erasures is estimated and an outer code block rate capable of correcting an erasure ratio is chosen. The input is encoded using the outer code block rate to form an outer code block. One or more inner code blocks are formed by encoding segments of the outer code block using the inner code block rate. These inner code blocks are then transmitted. The count of inner code blocks is greater than 1, and the PER is a ratio of the expected number of erasures to the count of inner code blocks.

Using erasure coding on partial code block communication interruption

Various arrangements for performing transmodulation of a forward feeder link are presented. A first data stream and a second data stream can be modulated into a higher-order modulation forward feeder link having a higher-order digital modulation scheme. A satellite can receive the higher-order modulation forward feeder link. The satellite can demodulate the higher-order modulator forward feeder link into a bit stream. This bit stream may then be remodulated and retransmitted as multiple forward user links.

Transmodulation for a multi-beam satellite communication system

Systems and methods for processing bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) signals from a BICM transmitter to generate information bit estimates of information in the BICM signals, including a decoder to generate the information bit estimates of the information in the received BICM signals and a symbol a posteriori probability (APP) generator to generate first symbol a posteriori probabilities (APPs) by processing the BICM signals based on Euclidean distances derived from the BICM signals, and further based on symbol probability log-likelihood ratios (SPLLRs) provided to the symbol APP generator by an extrinsic-information-based symbol probability log-likelihood ratio (SPLLR) generator. The SPLLR generator generates the SPLLRs directly from extrinsic information based on updated symbol APPs output from the decoder, without converting the extrinsic information into log-likelihoods (LLs), and the decoder generates the information bit estimates based on the first symbol APPs output from the symbol APP generator.

Simplified system and method for bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding (BICM-ID)

Various arrangements for improving performance of code split communications are presented herein. A second portion of a first codeword and a third portion of a second codeword can be transmitted using symbols such that each transmitted symbol includes bits from the second portion of the first codeword and bits from the third portion of the second codeword. At a receiver, decoder inputs can be generated for the third portion of the second codeword based on an optimized constellation and the second portion of the first codeword. The second portion of the first codeword is used to identify a label group of the optimized constellation and eliminate all other label groups of the plurality of label groups. Within each label group, symbol labels are Gray labeled. However, at least a first symbol label is not Gray labeled with an adjacent second symbol label of a different label group.

The disclosure relates to bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative decoding. In some implementations, a receiver comprises: a first memory including multiple first sub-memories; a decoder configured to perform first operations comprising: calculating, first extrinsic information of multiple code bits associated with multiple received symbols; and a demapper configured to perform second operations comprising: calculating soft decision information of the code bits; calculating, based on the soft decision information and the first extrinsic information, second extrinsic information of the code bits; and writing the second extrinsic information of the code bits into the first memory such that, for each received symbol, each sub-memory of the first sub-memories respectively stores the second extrinsic information associated with a respective one of the code bits corresponding to the received symbol.

Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer storage media, for improving adaptive satellite communication. In some implementations, a method includes receiving, by a receiver and from a transmitter, code blocks transmitted according to a first set of parameters that comprises one or more of a first modulation used to transmit the code blocks or a first coding used to encode the code blocks for transmission. A number of corrupted code blocks and a number of parity blocks in a series of the code blocks received are determined. The number of corrupted code blocks are compared with the number of parity blocks. A second set of parameters are determined based on the comparison of the number of corrupted code blocks with the number of parity blocks. The second set of parameters are communicated to the transmitter for subsequent transmissions.

Adaptive satellite communications

Communication terminals, systems and methods are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, a method for improving communication throughput when experiencing periodic blockages includes reading a plurality of data elements into an interleaver in one of a quasi-reverse order and a consecutive order, reading the plurality of data elements out of the interleaver in the other of the quasi-reverse order and the consecutive order, and. transmitting the plurality of data elements via a communication channel that experiences periodic blockages.

Systems and methods are described, and one method includes allocate a continuous duration within a TDMA scheme, for asynchronous NOMA transmissions, and extending from an allocation start time to an allocation termination time, formed of contiguous time slots of the TDMA scheme, and included providing to asynchronous NOMA user terminals an indication of the allocation start time and termination time, indicating allowance to perform asynchronous NOMA transmissions within a start time constraint that starts of the asynchronous NOMA transmissions do not precede the allocation start time, and terminations of the asynchronous NOMA transmissions do not succeed the allocation termination time.

Asynchronous non-orthogonal multiple access in a time/frequency division orthogonal multiple access network

Systems and methods are described for performing Layered Belief LDPC decoding on received Standard Belief LDPC encoded data bursts. In on implementation, a receiver: demodulates a signal, the demodulated signal including a noise corrupted signal derived from a codeword encoded using standard belief LDPC encoding; converts the noise corrupted signal derived from the standard belief LDPC encoded codeword to a noise corrupted signal derived from a layered belief LDPC encoded codeword; and decodes the noise corrupted signal derived from the layered belief LDPC encoded codeword using a layered belief LDPC decoder. In further implementations, systems are described for reducing collisions in Layered Belief LDPC decoders that occur when multiple parity checks need the same soft decision at the same time. In these implementations, elements in an original LBD decoder table are rearranged to increase the distance between elements specifying the same location in a RAM where soft decisions are stored.

Methods and apparatus for increasing spectral efficiency in non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) communication, that implement receiving a signal stream from a user, splitting the signal stream into a plurality of sub-streams, applying a forward error coding (FEC) to each one of the sub-streams, and outputting a corresponding plurality of FEC encoded sub-streams. This can include modulating a corresponding carrier with each of the FEC encoded sub-streams, and combining and transmitting the corresponding plurality of modulated carrier signals. The modulated carrier signals can each carry a respective one of the FEC encoded sub-streams.

System and method for asynchronous multi-stream transmission for NOMA

A multiple access scheme is provided. A first communications terminal encodes a first data stream using a forward error correction (FEC) code, and scrambles the encoded first data stream based on a first scrambling signature. A second communications terminal encodes a second data stream using the FEC code, and scrambles the encoded second data stream based on a second scrambling signature. The first scrambling signature and the second scrambling signature are used, respectively, by the first terminal and the second terminal to distinguish the first encoded data stream from the second encoded data stream as respectively originating from the first terminal and the second terminal in a multiple access scheme, whereby the first encoded data stream and the second encoded data stream simultaneously share a wireless communications channel. The FEC code is a low density parity check (LDPC) code configured with a data node degree of two or three.
