A scanner transmits a generally collimated beam of radiation such that the beam rotates about an axis to form a conical scanning pattern. The scanner comprises a concave parabolic reflector having a geometric axis and a focus, a rotation mechanism for effecting rotation of the concave parabolic reflector about a rotation axis which is angularly offset with respect to the geometric axis of the concave parabolic reflector, an opening formed in the concave parabolic reflector proximate the rotation axis thereof, and a convex parabolic reflector disposed along the rotation axis of the concave parabolic reflector and having a focus which is approximately co-located with the focus of the concave parabolic reflector. Directing collimated radiation through the opening formed in the concave parabolic reflector and onto the convex parabolic reflector while rotating the concave parabolic reflector about the rotation axis thereof effects transmission of a generally collimated beam of radiation such that the beam rotates about the rotation axis so as to form a conical scanning pattern.

Tilted primary clamshell lens laser scanner

A star tracker for generating positional information for a vehicle includes a holographic telescope (150) having one or more fields of view for imaging stellar objects. The telescope includes a plurality of radiation detectors (100) and an input aperture comprised of a primary holographic optical element (HOE) (134). The primary HOE provides one or more wavefronts to one or more secondary HOEs (136), each of which applies a chromatic correction so as to correct for a chromatic aberration induced by the primary HOE. A single or multiple field of view Schmidt telescope embodiment is also disclosed having one or more aspheric corrector plate HOEs and one or more associated concave spherical reflectors.

Strapdown stellar sensor and holographic multiple field of view

Improved optical holographic apparatuses are disclosed for making white light viewable rainbow holograms in one step utilizing concave mirror optics. On-axis and off-axis configurations are presented for holography of real objects and for reduced image holography of a real image projection from a laser transmission hologram. An optical apparatus and curved recording devices are devised to reduce and/or eliminate certain aberrations introduced by the concave mirror. To yield a wide holographic field of view at low cost, small diameter mirrors are employed in two alternative devices for replacing a single concave mirror in the various embodiments. Two methods are then presented to obtain reduced image size one-step rainbow holograms from a full size object or holographic image. Finally, a method is given for specifying the radius of curvature and minimum effective aperture of a concave mirror system in one step rainbow holography that maintains image aberrations at acceptable levels and yields the desired field of view.
