Invasive medical devices including a substantially non-eluting antimicrobial treatment. One or more external and/or internal surfaces of the medical device include a substantially non-eluting copper-coated surface that assists in preventing microbial colonization of the coated surface. This in turn reduces the incidence of infection to the patient originating from the medical device. In one embodiment, a catheter assembly is disclosed and comprises an elongate catheter tube that defines at least one lumen, at least one extension leg including a luer connector, and a bifurcation hub including at least one fluid passageway that provides fluid communication between the extension leg and the lumen. A substantially non-eluting copper coating is disposed on a surface of at least one of the lumen, the extension leg, the luer connector, and the fluid passageway. The coating is applied via an electroless deposition process. A water-shed coating is disposed on the copper coating.

Application of antimicrobial agents to medical devices

An implantable device for treating hypervolemia includes an expandable chamber, a rigid chamber coupled to the expandable chamber, a first valve in fluid communication with both the expandable chamber and the rigid chamber, a second valve in fluid communication with the rigid chamber and an exterior of the implantable device, and an osmotic fluid. The expandable chamber includes a first semipermeable membrane. The rigid chamber includes a piston. The first valve has an open position to permit fluid flow between the expandable chamber and the rigid chamber. The second valve has an open position to permit fluid flow from the rigid chamber to the exterior of the implantable device. The osmotic fluid has a higher osmotic concentration than bodily fluid. The osmotic fluid is designed to absorb water from the bodily fluid through the first semipermeable membrane.

Implantable device for treating hypervolemia

A catheter () for treating hypervolemia in a patient includes a luminal ingress () joined to a luminal egress () at a distal end portion () of the catheter having a closed distal end (). The distal end portion is configured to at least temporarily reside within a vessel of the patient, the distal end portion including a semipermeable membrane. The luminal ingress is designed to convey an influent having a first osmotic concentration to the distal end portion. The semipermeable membrane is configured to pass blood-borne water from the vessel into the distal portion. The blood-borne water is absorbed by the influent to produce an effluent having a second osmotic concentration lower than the first osmotic concentration. Systems () with the catheter and methods for treating hypervolemia are also disclosed.

Catheters, catheter-based systems, and methods thereof for treating hypervolemia

Systems and methods for detecting an implanted medical device, such as a vascular access port. The implanted medical device may include at least one passive RFID tag that has disposed thereon information about the implanted medical device. The at least one passive RFID tag is designed to be interrogated by a detector associated with an external device, such as an infusion set with an access needle. The interrogating signal induces a return signal from the at least one passive RFID tags. The strength of the return signal may be dependent on the distance and orientation of the tag relative to the detector. The system may be designed to interpret different signal strengths from different RFID tags to guide the needle to a correct insertion position, thereby accessing a port that cannot be readily detected visually or by palpation.

Systems and methods for locating and identifying an implanted medical device

Invasive medical devices including a substantially non-eluting antimicrobial treatment are disclosed. An access port including a housing, a first septum, a second septum, and a radiographic indicator. The first septum and the second septum can respectively cover a first reservoir and a second reservoir of the access port. The first septum can include a first sub-pattern of protrusions and the second septum can include a second sub-pattern of protrusions. The radiographic indicator can include a first portion including information pertaining to the first sub-pattern, and a second portion including information pertaining to the second sub-pattern.

Radiopaque and septum-based indicators for a multi-lumen implantable port

A method for power injection of fluids through an access port includes implanting the access port in a patient, palpating the access port, imaging the access port, and introducing contrast media into the patient through the access port at a rate in a range from about two milliliters per second to about five milliliters per second. The access port may include a housing, a first septum, a second septum, and a radiographic indicator. The first septum and the second septum may respectively cover a first reservoir and a second reservoir of the access port. The first septum may include a first sub-pattern of protrusions and the second septum may include a second sub-pattern of protrusions. The radiographic indicator may include a first portion including information pertaining to the first sub-pattern, and a second portion including information pertaining to the second sub-pattern. The imaging identifies the radiographic indicator.

An implantable multi-lumen access port including indicators for ascertaining characteristics of the port is disclosed. In one embodiment, the access port comprises a housing that defines a first reservoir and a second reservoir. A first septum and second septum are respectively coupled with the housing to provide selective access to the first and second reservoirs. Each septum includes a plurality of protrusions defined about a periphery thereof that are palpable after implantation of the port in a patient to determine a relative position of the first septum with respect to the second septum. A radiographically observable indicator is also included on a base of the housing, so as to provide information relating to a characteristic of the dual-lumen port, such as suitability for power injection of fluids. The indicator in one embodiment includes a substantially rigid radiopaque component.

An access port for subcutaneous implantation is disclosed. Such an access port may comprise a body for capturing a septum for repeatedly inserting a needle into a cavity defined within the body. Further, the access port may include at least one feature structured and configured for identification of the access port subsequent to subcutaneous implantation. Methods of identifying a subcutaneously implanted access port are also disclosed. For example, a subcutaneously implanted access port may be provided and at least one feature of the subcutaneously implanted access port may be perceived. Further, the subcutaneously implanted access port may be identified in response to perceiving the at least one feature. In one embodiment, an identification feature is engraved or otherwise defined by the access port, so as to be visible after implantation via x-ray imaging technology.
