Techniques of implementing software filtered non-volatile memory in a computing device are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method includes detecting an entry being written to a guest admin submission queue (gASQ) by a memory driver of a virtual machine hosted on the computing device. Upon detecting the entry written to the gASQ by the memory driver, the command in the entry is analyzed to determine whether the command is allowed based on a list of allowed or disallowed commands. In response to determining that the command in the entry is not allowed, without sending the command to the non-volatile memory, generating an execution result of the command in response to the entry being written to the gASQ by the memory driver. As such, potentially harmful commands from the memory driver are prevented from being executed by the non-volatile memory.

Software filtered memory devices in computing systems

Embodiments described herein relate to adjusting performance of a virtualization layer to reduce underutilization of a physical device. The virtualization layer virtualizes access to the device for a VM. When a guest in the VM makes a request to a virtual device, the virtualization layer and the device work together to satisfy the request. Some time is spent by the virtualization layer (software/CPU time), for instance delivering the request from the VM to the physical device, mapping the request from the virtual device to the physical device, etc. Additional time is spent by the device in performing the request (device time). The software/CPU time relative to the device time serves as a basis for deciding whether to increase or decrease processing capacity of the virtualization layer (or a component thereof), thus reducing underutilization of the device and over-provisioning of processing capacity to the virtualization layer.

Dynamic scheduling for virtual storage devices

A technology is described for a load time updatable driver. An example method may include presenting a driver interface to a computing instance launched in a computing service environment that enables the computing instance to interact with a virtualized resource, where the driver interface is an interface to driver functionality that enables the computing instance to interact with the virtualized resource via a hypervisor. Context information for the computing instance may be obtained and the context information may be used to identify a driver image for the virtualized resource that enables the computing instance to interact with the virtualized resource. The driver image for the virtualized resource may be obtained and the driver image may be loaded into computer memory and registered with the driver interface.
