The disclosed battery-powered vapor dispensing apparatus has a housing with an access opening, an air intake port, an air discharge port, and means for supporting a vaporizable product in a path between the intake and discharge ports. A structurally-integrated mechanism for creating air flow along the path, assembles as a unit with the housing. The mechanism includes a chassis and an electric motor having electrical contact lugs on one end and a shaft supporting a fan projecting from the other. The chassis comprises a base, means for mounting the motor, a battery compartment, and means for mounting two resilient wire connectors such that one portion of each is resiliently urged against a lug of the motor and a second portion of each is resiliently urged against a battery terminal. The chassis fits within the access opening such that the motor, fan, connectors, and battery compartment are positioned on one side of the base, and the opposite side of the base constitutes a generally continuous extension of the housing exterior.

A battery-powered apparatus, for inducing air flow past a product capable of being vaporized, includes a compact housing that comprises a hollow outer shell and a hollow, generally cylindrical inner shell, having an axis, on which the operating components of the apparatus are supported. The inner shell is mounted with the outer shell by a hinge to pivot substantially on the axis between closed and open positions. In the closed position the inner shell compliments the outer shell to define an enclosed space and shield the apparatus components. In the open position, the inner shell is nested within the outer shell to expose the apparatus components. The product and a battery for powering the apparatus may be assembled into a cartridge formed to be received in the apparatus housing. Electrical battery contacts and a support for the cartridge in the housing are also disclosed.

A device for releasing a volatile substance into the environment in a controlled manner comprises a reservoir of substance-absorbent material, for storing the substance, that is encapsulated in an envelope, at least a portion of which comprises a permeable material having porosity at least equal to ultramicroporosity. The permeable envelope portion has a greater affinity for the substance than does the reservoir material. The remainder of the envelope comprises a material impermeable to the substance. Accordingly, the substance permeates through the permeable envelope portion to be released therefrom in vapor form into the environment.

A device incorporated in an apparatus for automatically and periodically operating an aerosol container indicates when the container has been emptied and then stops operation of the container. The container operating apparatus includes a motor operatively linked to the container and a power supply for powering the motor. The stopping and indicating device comprises a timing circuit that includes a first time measuring network that produces motor actuating output pulses at a first periodic rate, each actuating pulse being of duration sufficient to cause the motor to operate the container. The timing circuit also includes a second time measuring network that produces non-actuating output pulses at a second periodic rate substantially greater than the first rate, each non-actuating pulse being of duration insufficient to cause the motor to operate the container. A switch selectively operates the motor through either the first or the second time measuring network and a sensor, which determines when the container has been emptied, actuates the switch to operate the motor through the second time measuring network.

A walled enclosure or cage is provided in which laboratory animals may be maintained for observation and evaluation. The floor of the enclosure is provided by a plurality of conductive bar elements that are spacially separate and extend across the bottom of the enclosure. Spacial separation of the bars insulates one from the other and further, space is provided in the floor to remove animal waste, excess food and the like. An electrical resistor is connected between each two adjacent conductive bars and cooperate with the bars to define a resistor network to which a closely controlled feed current is supplied. An animal makes contact with the conductive bars which lowers resistance of the network and produces a voltage change. The resistor network is a.c. coupled to a differential amplifier, and a comparator which receive pulses from capacitors between the network and the amplifier and prepare same for an interface means for a pulse recording system. The amplified pulse may be shaped, divided or the like as required by the recording system. The method of using the present system involves detection of contact between an animal foot and the conductive grid bars, whereupon contact area determines the resistance of the network and a proportional signal is produced therefrom. The signal is then amplified, manipulated to avoid ambient electrical interference, such as an incidental electrical field from line current at 60 Hertz, and/or shaped, divided or the like to provide input to a particular recording system. Raw data from the recording system can then be correlated to locomotor activity of the laboratory animal.
