A power tong jaw comprising a jaw body having upper and lower flange sections with flange apertures formed through the upper and lower flange sections. The power tong jaw will further have a jaw roller including a pin aperture and a roller pin positioned through the pin aperture in the jaw roller and through at least one of the upper or lower jaw flange apertures. The power tong jaw will further include a flexible retaining mechanism (i) positioned between outer surfaces of the upper and lower flange and (ii) engaging the roller pin.

A power tong body having a central opening comprises upper and lower cover plates and a rotary gear contained there between. The tong incorporates the centering guide, e.g. rollers, that extend between the rotary gear and respective tong covers. Such centering guides through the central openings in the tong body covers and provide contact surfaces carried that permit differential rotation of the rotary gear with respect to such covers. The rollers may roll on circular races formed by the inside edge face surfaces of the tong covers bordering the central opening. The support rollers may also extend beyond the upper and lower cover plates and engage with a guide surface or race formed on the respective cage plates of the tong, centrally locating such cage plates with respect to the rotary gear while allowing differential rotation of the cage plates with respect to the rotary gear.

A backup tong that comprises an activating mechanism for advancing a jaw die mounted on a jaw carrier within the backup into engagement with a pipe positioned centrally therein. The jaw carrier is fitted within the tong body to permit a sliding action radially toward the center point of the opening in the backup tong. Such mechanism includes a cam surface located along a first extension of a cam arm which pivots around a fixed pivot pin carried by the body of the backup. The other extension of the cam arm is connected toward its outer end to an actuator, anchored at one end to the backup body and oriented at the other end to swing the cam arm about the pivot pin.

An improved variable pitch fan comprising a fan hub, with fan blades extending radially outward from the fan hub and mounted for rotation about respective radially extending axes corresponding to each fan blade. Each fan blade has a blade surface extending perpendicularly to the radially extending axis of the fan blade, each blade surface lying between respective outer edges of the corresponding fan blade and facing rearward. A pitch shifting mechanism is mounted in the hub and interconnects with the fan blades to control the rotational position of each fan blade about the corresponding radially extending axis of the fan blade. The respective outer edges of each fan blade diverge as the fan blade extends further radially outward; and the blade surface of each fan blade has an angle of attack that decreases as the fan blade extends radially outward. Each blade surface has a constant or increasing radius of curvature as the respective fan blade extends further radially outward. The respective outer edges of each fan blade are straight. Each fan blade has integral moulded counterweight supports and counterweights mounted on the counterweight supports.

Variable pitch fan

A variable pitch fan in which the pitch of the fan blades is varied under control of a controller according to the speed of the fan. The controller is programmed to respond to increased fan speed by decreasing pitch of the fan blades. The variable pitch fan has a piston extending axially from a main shaft, about which main shaft a fan blade hub rotates. A pitch shifter is mounted on a cylinder, which itself is mounted on the piston. The pitch shifter is actuated by hydraulic fluid supplied through the main shaft to the cylinder. The piston is preferably axially stationary in relation to the main shaft. The cylinder is secured against rotational movement by cooperating out of round surfaces. Grease for the pitch shifter is supplied through the guide pin. One guide pin may be used for grease supply, while another may be used for excess grease return. Cooling of a pitch shifter may be accomplished using a heat sink mounted within the fan hub, preferably in a fan configuration, to conduct heat away from the cylinder into air rotating within the fan hub. Counterweights are mounted on each fan blade of a variable pitch fan, preferably hydraulically actuated, in a position which generates a torque opposite in direction to torque generated by the fan blades. The counterweights may be overbalanced, underbalanced, or balanced.
