Technologies directed to interleaved phased array antennas are described. One apparatus includes a support structure, a first phased array antenna, and a second phased array antenna. The first array antenna includes a first set of antenna elements disposed on a surface of the support structure. The first set of antenna elements is located within a perimeter of a first circular area. The second antenna includes a second set of antenna elements. The second set of antenna elements is located within a perimeter of a second circular area. The second circular area partially overlaps the first circular area. The majority of the second set of antenna elements are located outside the perimeter of the first circular area. A majority of the second set of antenna elements are located in the second circular area in the area not overlapped by the first circular area.

Interleaved phased array antennas

Technologies directed to a directional calibration antenna for calibration of an array antenna of a communication system are described. The communication system includes the array antenna which includes a number of antenna elements. The number of antenna elements are located in an area on a first side of a support structure. A directional antenna is located at a first height above a plane of the array antenna and at a periphery of the area. The directional antenna is pointed towards the array antenna and is located within a near field of the array antenna.

Peripheral antenna placement for calibration for a phased array antenna

Technologies directed to arranging antenna elements in a triangular pattern on an antenna module of a phased array antenna are described. The phased array antenna includes a support structure and a first antenna module coupled to the support structure. The first antenna module element has a rectangular shape and includes a first set of antenna elements arranged as a first row and a second row within the rectangular shape. An antenna element of the first row and two antenna elements of the second row form a triangular pattern. Two adjacent antenna elements of the first set of antenna elements are separated by a first distance. Each antenna element of the first set of antenna elements has a first size that is less than half of the first distance.

Technologies directed to interleaved phased array antennas are described. One apparatus includes a support structure, a first phased array antenna, and a second phased array antenna. The first array antenna includes a first set of antenna elements disposed on a surface of the support structure. The first set of antenna elements are located within a perimeter of a first ellipse. The second antenna includes a second set of antenna elements. The second set of antenna elements are located within a perimeter of a second ellipse. The second ellipse partially overlaps the first ellipse. The majority of the second set of antenna elements are located outside the perimeter of the first ellipse. A majority of the second set of antenna are located in the second ellipse in the area not overlapped by the first ellipse.

Technologies directed to calibrating phased array antennas are described. A processing device of a communication device causes a first radio to send a first signal via a first antenna element. The first signal has a set of tones. Each tone of the set of tones has a frequency within a fixed frequency range. The processing device causes a second radio to receive a second signal via a second antenna element. The second signal is a response to the first signal. The processing device determines that there is a difference between the second signal and a reference signal. The processing device adjusts at least one of a phase parameter value, a gain parameter value, or a time-delay parameter value of a radio frequency component based on the difference.

Techniques for in-orbit calibration of phased array antenna

Technologies directed to embedding a calibration antenna in an antenna structure of a phased array antenna are described. The antenna structure includes a ground plane, a first antenna element, and a second antenna element. The first antenna element and the second antenna element are located in a first plane. The second antenna element is separated from the first antenna element by a first distance. Dielectric material is located between the ground plane and the first plane. The antenna structure further includes a third antenna element that is located in a second plane. The second plane is located between the ground plane and the first plane. The third antenna element is located in an area with a first dimension and a second dimension that are each less than half of the first distance.

Embedded antenna for calibration for a phased array antenna

Technologies directed to a mechanically steered antenna with improved efficiency are described. One antenna includes a first reflector, a second reflector, and an antenna feed element. The second reflector is located on a reflecting side of the first reflector. The second reflector is offset from the first reflector. The second reflector receives an electromagnetic signal from the antenna feed element and outputs an inverted electromagnetic signal corresponding to the electromagnetic signal. The first reflector receives the inverted electromagnetic signal and outputs a collimated beam corresponding to the inverted electromagnetic signal. The antenna further includes a mechanism coupled to the first reflector. The mechanism rotates the first reflector about a first axis. The first axis is along a direction of the inverted electromagnetic signal.
