A heterogeneous population of cells are separated and collected according to a method. The heterogeneous population of cells in a paramagnetic medium are placed in a fluidic channel in which the fluidic channel comprises two or more outlets. The heterogeneous population of cells in the fluidic channel are separated based on differences in magnetic susceptibility and density of the heterogeneous population of cells. Fluid comprising the separated cells is withdrawn from the two or more outlets using variable flow rates by fluidic pumps at respective ones of the two or more outlets simultaneously to fractionalize the fluid comprising the separated cells across the two or more outlets by manipulation of the variable flow rates relative to one another.

Sorting biological and non-biological moieties using magnetic levitation

A microfluidic strain sensing device for monitoring intraocular pressure. The device has a contact lens and a closed microfluidic network embedded with the contact lens. The network has a volume that is sensitive to an applied strain. The network distinguishes: (i) a gas reservoir containing a gas, (ii) a liquid reservoir containing a liquid that changes volume when the strain is applied, and (iii) a sensing channel able to hold the liquid within the sensing channel. The sensing channel connects the gas reservoir on one end and connects the liquid reservoir on another end. The sensing channel establishes a liquid-gas equilibrium pressure interface and equilibrium within the sensing channel, which would fluidically change as a response to radius of curvature variations on a cornea, or as a response to mechanical stretching and release of the cornea. The liquid-gas equilibrium pressure interface and equilibrium are used for measuring the intraocular pressure.

Closed microfluidic network for strain sensing embedded in a contact lens to monitor intraocular pressure

A contact lens with a sensor region are described. The contact allows for normal vision and a concentric ring around the vision area of the lens includes one or more sensors for detecting changes in the interocular pressure of the eye. The data may be scanned using a camera, or in some embodiments, the data may be transmitted using a micro antenna in the sensing region. The data may be analyzed using a software application on a cell phone or other computing device.

Systems and methods for levitating populations of moieties, cells, or other such units using one or more magnets in a microfluidic environment are provided. These systems and methods may be used to, for example, separate or sort heterogeneous populations of the units from one another, to assembly a multi-unit assembly during the levitating of the units, and to evaluate samples at the point of care in real-time. a contact lens that monitors the radius of curvature of cornea includes an amplification chamber, am annular membrane, a microfluidic channel, and a gas reservoir within a top and bottom lens layers of the contact lens. The annular membrane is positioned within the amplification chamber and is in fluid communication with the gas reservoir through the microfluidic channel. A working gas within the gas reservoir and a working fluid within the amplification chamber and the microfluidic channel create a fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface. The curvature change of the cornea results the amplification chamber wall and the annular membrane to deflect, wherein the deflection results the fluid-gas equilibrium pressure interface baseline to change within the microfluidic channel. Then the baseline position change is recorded by an external imaging system to analysis sensitivity calculation of the cornea.
