Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for power savings for reduced capability devices. A method that may be performed by a user equipment (UE) includes receiving a shared bandwidth part (BWP) configuration and a group common BWP configuration. The group common BWP configuration indicates a group common BWP shared by a group of UEs, including the UE, having one or more common capabilities or a common UE type. The method includes communicating using the group common BWP based on the group common BWP configuration.

Power savings for reduced capability devices

Methods, systems, and apparatuses for wireless communication are disclosed. In one aspect, a user equipment (UE) determines to perform a synchronization procedure and receives at least one synchronization signal. The UE may generate a detection metric based at least in part on the at least one synchronization signal and compare the detection metric or detection metrics accumulated since determining to perform the synchronization procedure with a detection threshold. The detection threshold may be associated with the at least one synchronization signal utilized to determine whether the synchronization procedure can be terminated prior to receiving a predetermined number of synchronization signals. The UE may continue or terminate the synchronization procedure based at least in part on a result of the comparison.

Early termination of synchronization procedure

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described to enable a base station to configure additional reference signals, which may be referred to as configured reference signals, to include in a transmission to a user equipment (UE). The UE may transmit a report to the base station, indicating a UE capability for supporting configured reference signals, and the base station may configure a pattern for the configured reference signals. The base station may transmit an indication of the pattern to the UE, where the indication may include one or more characteristics associated with the configured reference signals. The base station may transmit the configured reference signals to the UE according to the pattern, along with one or more baseline reference signals, within an associated transmission. The UE may use the configured reference signals and the baseline reference signals to receive a transmission from the base station.

Reference signals for narrowband communications

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may signal, to a base station, a capability of the UE relating to carrier aggregation for a particular category or class of the UE, such as for narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) UEs. The UE may receive, from the base station, a configuration for carrier aggregation for the particular category or class of the UE based at least in part on the capability of the UE relating to carrier aggregation for the particular category or class of the UE. The UE may communicate with the base station using carrier aggregation based at least in part on the configuration for carrier aggregation for the particular category or class of the UE. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Carrier aggregation for narrowband internet of things user equipment

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a user equipment may determine a relationship between a first set of antenna ports, used for demodulation reference signals (DMRS) associated with a machine-type communication physical downlink control channel (MPDCCH) and used for the MPDCCH, and a second set of antenna ports used for cell-specific reference signals (CRS); receive CRS on one or more antenna ports of the second set of antenna ports; and receive the MPDCCH using at least the CRS based at least in part on the relationship. Numerous other aspects are provided.

Using cell-specific reference signals for a machine-type communication physical downlink control channel

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may retune from a first narrowband carrier to a second narrowband carrier. The UE may determine to retune in one or more symbols of either a first narrowband subframe or a second narrowband subframe based on the number of symbols for the UE to retune and a number of other factors. The other factors may include the start symbol of a downlink channel scheduled in the second narrowband subframe, the number of antenna ports configured for the UE, hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) identifier (ID), coding rate or effective coding rate, among others. The UE may determine to retune in the first narrowband subframe, the second narrowband subframe, or in both subframes in order to utilize reference signals transmitted to the UE and reception of all downlink messages scheduled for the UE.

Narrowband retuning in wireless communications

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. In some cases, devices such as band limited (BL) or coverage enhancement (CE) user equipment (UE) having limited transmitting and receiving capability may operate using a subset of a system bandwidth of a carrier (e.g., narrowbands). To support frequency hopping or frequency diversity in transmissions, for example, such devices may utilize retuning when a resource allocation moves from a first narrowband to a second narrowband. Retuning, however, may create challenges when transmitting and receiving capability is limited. Aspects of this disclosure may support a flexible starting physical resource block (PRB) for indicating new resource allocations for BL or CE UEs. In some aspects, a UE is disclosed which may retune between consecutive transmission time intervals (TTIs) or subframes, for example, from a first tuning band to a second tuning band (e.g., a newly defined retuning narrowband).

Retuning for flexible resource allocation

Channel estimation performance depends on the amount of averaging performed by a channel impulse response coherent filter. For half-duplex UEs, which use a single phase locked loop (PLL) for both downlink transmissions and uplink transmissions, averaging may not be performed across downlink subframes before and after uplink subframes if the PLL's phase changes and locks to a random initial value when switching transmission directions. Techniques disclosed herein facilitate estimating the PLL's random initial phase and enable correcting the phase of symbols accordingly. By correcting the phase of the symbols, it is possible to average across symbols before and after a frequency re-tune and/or a transmission direction switch based on the phase correction. This may serve to improve the accuracy of channel estimation. Further techniques disclosed herein may improve the accuracy of Doppler estimations by enabling the inclusion of symbols before and after a frequency re-tuning when performing the Doppler estimation.

Channel estimation for systems with PLL phase discontinuities

Aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques and apparatus for wireless communication. In one aspect, a method is provided which may be performed by a wireless device such as a user equipment (UE). The method generally includes determining a scheduled occurrence of a measurement gap, wherein the UE measures neighbor cell signal strength during the measurement gap, and adjusting the measurement gap based on at least one criterion.

Aspects of mitigating throughput degradation during wireless communication include determining that a first transmission signal fails decoding at a network entity due to transmit (TX) blanking when a user equipment (UE) supports dual subscriber identity module dual active (DSDA) and is operating in hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) with incremental redundancy; determining whether a first retransmission signal for the first transmission signal fails decoding at the network entity; and retransmitting the first transmission signal as a new transmission signal when a determination is made that the first retransmission signal for the first transmission signal fails decoding at the network entity.

Mitigating the impact of transmit blanking during uplink communications

Aspects related to allocating transmission power in wireless communications are described. It can be determined whether data is to be transmitted on an uplink control channel in one or more upcoming transmission time intervals (TTIs). Based on this determination, transmission power is allocated to an uplink enhanced dedicated channel in the one or more upcoming TTIs. Where uplink control channel data is not to be transmitted in the one or more upcoming TTIs, transmission power that would have been used for the uplink control channels can instead be allocated to the enhanced dedicated channel.

Techniques for optimizing transmission power allocation in wireless communications

Techniques for estimating signal quality in a communication system are described. Scaled errors are obtained for inphase (I) and quadrature (Q) components of detected symbols. The scaled errors are determined based on a first function having higher resolution for small errors than large errors between the detected symbols and nearest modulation symbols. The first function may be a square root function or some other function that can provide good resolution for both low and high SNRs. The scaled errors for the I and Q components are combined to obtain combined scaled errors, which are averaged to obtain an average scaled error. A signal quality estimate is then determined based on the average scaled error and in accordance with a second function having non-linearity to compensate for the first function.

Signal quality estimator

Techniques to perform beam-steering and beam-forming to transmit data on a single eigenmode in a wideband multiple-input channel. In one method, a steering vector is obtained for each of a number of subbands. Depending on how the steering vectors are defined, beam-steering or beam-forming can be achieved for each subband. The total transmit power is allocated to the subbands based on a particular power allocation scheme (e.g., full channel inversion, selective channel inversion, water-filling, or uniform). A scaling value is then obtained for each subband based on its allocated transmit power. Data to be transmitted is coded and modulated to provide modulation symbols. The modulation symbols to be transmitted on each subband are scaled with the subband's scaling value and further preconditioned with the subband's steering vector. A stream of preconditioned symbols is then formed for each transmit antenna.
