A deposition system that mitigates feathering in a directly deposited pattern of organic material is disclosed. Deposition systems in accordance with the present disclosure include an evaporation source, an electrically conductive shadow mask, and an electrically conductive field plate. The source imparts a negative charge on vaporized organic molecules as they are emitted toward a target substrate. The source and substrate are biased to produce an electric field having field lines that extend normally between them. The shadow mask and field plate are located between the source and substrate and each functions as an electrostatic lens that directs the charged vapor molecules toward propagation directions aligned with the field lines as the charged vapor molecules approach and pass through them. As a result, the charged vapor molecules pass through the shadow mask to the substrate along directions that are substantially normal to the substrate surface, thereby mitigating feathering in the deposited material pattern.

Apparatus and method for direct patterning of an organic material using an electrostatic mask

A direct-deposition system forming a high-resolution pattern of material on a substrate is disclosed. Vaporized atoms from an evaporation source pass through a pattern of through-holes in a shadow mask to deposit on the substrate in the desired pattern. The shadow mask is held in a mask chuck that enables the shadow mask and substrate to be separated by a distance that can be less than ten microns. Prior to reaching the shadow mask, vaporized atoms pass through a collimator that operates as a spatial filter that blocks any atoms not travelling along directions that are nearly normal to the substrate surface. Vaporized atoms that pass through the shadow mask exhibit little or no lateral spread after passing through through-holes and the material deposits on the substrate in a pattern that has very high fidelity with the through-hole pattern of the shadow mask.

High-precision shadow-mask-deposition system and method therefor

A quantum rod based color pixel backlight system for Liquid Crystal Display, not requiring color filters and traditional polarizer, comprising multiplicity of LEDs, emitting ultraviolet or near-ultraviolet or blue light, assembled at one edge of a ultraviolet or near-ultraviolet or blue light transmitting light guide, which has other three edges and bottom surface coated with ultraviolet/near-ultraviolet reflecting layer and its top surface roughened with ultraviolet and near-ultraviolet extracting pixel patterns that contain aligned layers of quantum rods that emit different colors of plane polarized light in red, blue and green region with sharp spectrum, to increase the color gamut and optical efficiency of LCD screen, upon excitation by ultraviolet or near-ultraviolet or blue light. The formed pixels contain reflective islands or continuous reflective surface, underneath the layers of aligned quantum rods, to reflect the visible rays, generated by the pixelated quantum rods, towards the LCD and suppress the visible light leaving the pixel in other directions as well as suppress the visible light from adjacent pixels entering the pixel. Thus suppressing the inter-pixel color mixing that could occur without the incorporation of reflective islands or continuous reflective layer. LCD not requiring color filters and traditional polarizer, a micro-lens sheet and the light guide with color pixels are placed in substantial alignment to provide a color pixel backlight system for LCD. Thus plane polarized red, blue and green pixels of light from the light guide passes through the intended red, blue and green pixels of the color LCD, not requiring color filters and traditional polarizer, resulting in color pixel backlighting that enhances the optical efficiency of LCD as well as the color gamut on LCD screen.

Quantum rod based color pixel backlight for LCD

A ultra-violet based color pixel backlight system for color filter-less Liquid Crystal Display, comprising multiplicity of LEDs, emitting UV or NUV light in the wavelength range of 150 nm to 390 nm, assembled at one edge of a UV transmitting light guide, which has other three edges and bottom surface coated with UV reflecting layer and its top surface etched with UV and NUV extracting pixel patterns that contain phosphors that emit different colors of light in red, blue and green region when excited by UV or NUV light. The etched pixels contain Aluminum islands underneath the phosphor layers to reflect the visible rays generated by the phosphors of the pixel and suppress the visible light leaving the pixel as well as suppress the visible light from adjacent pixel entering the pixel. Thus suppressing the color mixing that could occur without the incorporation of Al islands. LCD without color pixels, a micro-lens sheet and the light guide with color pixels are placed in substantial alignment to provide a color pixel backlight system for LCD. Thus red, blue and green pixels of light from the light guide passes through the intended red, blue and green pixels of the color filter-less LCD, resulting in color pixel backlighting that enhances the optical efficiency of LCD.

Suppression of color mixing in UV LED based color pixel backlight for liquid crystal display

A ultra-violet based color pixel backlight system for color filter-less Liquid Crystal Display, comprising multiplicity of LEDs, emitting UV or NUV light in the wavelength range of 150 nm to 390 nm, assembled at one edge of a UV transmitting light guide, which has other three edges and bottom surface coated with UV reflecting layer and its top surface roughened with UV and NUV extracting pixel patterns that contain layers of quantum dots that emit different colors of light in red, blue and green region with sharp spectrum, to increase the color gamut on LCD screen, upon excitation by UV or NUV light. The formed pixels contain reflective islands, underneath the layers of quantum dots, to reflect the visible rays, generated by the pixelated quantum dots, towards the LCD and suppress the visible light leaving the pixel as well as suppress the visible light from adjacent pixels entering the pixel. Thus suppressing the color mixing that could occur without the incorporation of reflective islands. LCD without color filters, a micro-lens sheet and the light guide with color pixels are placed in substantial alignment to provide a color pixel backlight system for LCD. Thus red, blue and green pixels of light from the light guide passes through the intended red, blue and green pixels of the color filter-less LCD, resulting in color pixel backlighting that enhances the optical efficiency of LCD as well as the color gamut on LCD screen.

UV LED based color pixel backlight incorporating quantum dots for increasing color gamut of LCD

A hybrid organic light emitting diode employing fluorescent family of blue light-emitting OLED and phosphorescent family of red and green light emitting OLED, each family being electrically isolated for driving current in to them independent of each other and thus prevent overloading the phosphorescent family when fluorescent family of OLED is driven at high current density. The electrical isolation built in to the device gives long life for the hybrid OLED and yields high brightness. The independent driving also yields additional advantage of varying the color temperature of white light from the device and thus enables the device to function as a variable color OLED lamp.

A ultra-violet based color pixel backlight system for Liquid Crystal Display, that does not contain the traditional color filters, comprising multiplicity of LEDs, emitting UV light in the wavelength range of 250 nm to 390 nm, assembled at one edge of a UV transmitting light guide, which has other three edges and bottom surface coated with UV reflecting layer and its top surface etched with UV extracting pixel patterns that contain phosphors that emit different colors of light in red, blue and green region when excited by UV light. A sheet of micro-lens is assembled between the light guide and the LCD to have the etched pixels in substantial alignment with the pixels of LCD and the lenses of the sheet of micro-lens. Thus red, blue and green pixels of light from the light guide passes through the intended red, blue and green pixels of LCD that has no traditional color filters, resulting in color pixel backlighting that enhances the optical efficiency of LCD.

UV based color pixel backlight for liquid crystal display

A flexible organic light emitting light source employing a flexible substrate that comprises a thin ployimide layer sandwiched by two metallic layers of which one metallic layer whose surface not in contact with polyimide layer contains OLED device that is coated with pore-free conformal barrier coating of inorganic oxide through Atomic Layer Epitaxy process and the barrier coating being completely encapsulated by a UV cured thick hard coat. The flexible device is sealed with a flexible plastic cover and the bottom external surface of metallic layer is integrated with a lamp drive circuit.

A very large area plasma display for indoor and outdoor application ranging in size to several feet in diagonal, incorporating plurality of 'tiles' of plasma pixels comprising plasma sustain electrodes and dielectric barrier on one substrate and address electrode on other substrate, the substrates being kept in alignment to oppose each other and orient plasma sustain electrodes, with dielectric barrier, orthogonal to address electrodes. The presence of the dielectric barrier enhances the path length of Hg-inert gas plasma resulting in increased UV generation and hence increased visible light that enhances the luminous efficiency of the large area plasma display. Plurality of plasma pixels are fabricated in a single panel called 'tile' and hermetically sealed. The &#x2018;tiles&#x2019; are assembled to generate a large area plasma display thus eliminating the need for expensive process equipments and tedious procedures to handle large area substrates.

A metal sealed organic light emitting diode device comprising a lid, containing a recessed portion to accommodate large quantity of getter/dessicant, a band of metal stack at the perimeter over which is laid a band of low temperature melting solder alloy, pre-tinned subsequently, and a substrate. The substrate containing organic light emitting diode at the central area with a band of metal stack at the perimeter. The lid and the substrate are placed together in substantial alignment such that the pre-tinned low melting solder band of the lid contacts the metal stack of the substrate and thermally sealed in a controlled atmosphere. Multiples of substrates are sealed with a single lid containing multiplicity of recessed portions with multi-segmented metal stack and pre-tinned solder band to derive a large area device.

An efficient organic light emitting diode (OLED) device&#x2014;incorporating a stack of thin films comprising a cathode, electron transport layer, hole modulating conductive layer, host layer, electron modulating conductive layer, hole transport layer, hole injection layer and a transparent anode layer&#x2014;has increased recombination efficiency to generate substantial amount of light. The electron modulating electrode and hole modulating electrode embedded in the stack are applied with appropriate electrical bias to contain the electrons and holes respectively inside the host layer to enhance recombination and consequently light output.

In order to operate Field Emission Displays (&ldquo;FEDs&rdquo;) contain an evacuated space. Generally, two soda-lime glass substrates, separated by a vacuum gap, act as cathode and anode. The vacuum gap is essential for the electrons to be emitted from the sharp cathode tips and travel towards the anode to give up their energy to the phosphor anode plate to emit light. The two plates and the frit seal holding the vacuum gap are under strain due to the atmospheric pressure acting on them. For small size FEDs , this strain is not a problem. However, for large area FEDs, the strain is detrimental both to the glass plates (2 mm thick) and frit seal. Under the strain, both the cathode and anode plates will buckle-in towards vacuum and, in turn, stress the frit seal, causing cracks and vacuum failure. To minimize this effect and enable the FED to operate normally, a field emissive display with a support plate for the cathode plate is disclosed. The support plate may reduce deflection of the cathode plate and decrease stress on the means for sealing the cathode plate to the anode plate. The support plate may be connected to the one side of the cathode plate at multiple points along the cathode plate. The support plate may also include plural channels with rounded inner walls defining spaces between the cathode plate and the support plate. Getter material may be provided in these spaces. To facilitate communication between the getter material in each channel, passages may be provided between the channels in the support plate.
