A wire electrical discharge machining apparatus for machining a workpiece by supplying electric discharge energy to a gap between a wire electrode and the workpiece by machining-electric-power supplying section and by relatively moving the wire electrode and the workpiece by a positioning section has a fluid supplying section in which a working-fluid supplying section for supplying a working liquid to the gap, a mist supplying section for supplying a mist to the gap, a gas supplying section for supplying a gas to the gap, and a cooling-fluid supplying section for supplying the working liquid which is a cooling fluid for cooling the workpiece are combined and are formed integrally. It is possible to effect wire electrical discharge machining which is suitable for attainment of higher accuracy and higher quality.

A discharge-processing power-source assembly, in which a processing liquid is interposed at a minute gap defined between a workpiece and an electrode, and processing is executed by discharge energy, comprises a D.C. power source supplying electric energy to the minute gap, switching elements for converting D.C. voltage from the D.C. power source to pulse voltage, and a snubber circuit for protecting the switching elements. The discharge-processing power-source assembly further comprises a relay contact for cutting off the snubber circuit when a switching frequency is high.

A device for positioning a first and second conductive elements and, in particular, detecting contact at a gap therebetween without causing damage to either element. A pulse voltage, having a low duty, is applied to the gap. The occurrence of a contact is identified by a voltage drop at the gap, which is detected by comparing the gap voltage to a reference. A control circuit, comprising a flip-flop or one-shot operative in synchronism with the source of pulse voltage, generates a contact identification signal in response to the detection of a voltage drop at the gap.
