A connector for use in a free-standing connector port for mating with an external pluggable module is disclosed. The connector has terminals that extend lengthwise of the connector so that cables may be terminated to the terminals and the terminals and cable generally are horizontally aligned together. The connector defines a card-receiving slot and is position in a cage that defines the connector port. The cables exit from the rear of the connector and from the connector port. The connector includes a heat sink that is configured to cool a module inserted into the connector port.

Circuit board bypass assemblies and components therefor

A connector for use in a free-standing connector port for mating with an external pluggable module is disclosed. The connector has terminals that extend lengthwise of the connector so that cables may be terminated to the terminals and the terminals and cable generally are horizontally aligned together. A cable bypass assembly is disclosed for use in providing a high speed transmission line for connecting aboard mountedconnector of an electronic device to a chip on the device board. The bypass cable assembly has a structure that permits it, where it is terminated to theboard mountedconnector and the chip member, or closely proximate thereto. to replicate closely the geometry of the cable. The connector terminals are arranged in alignment with the cable signal conductors and shield extensions are provided so that shielding can be provided up to and over the termination between the cable signal conductors and the board connector terminal tails. Likewise, a similar termination structure is provided at the opposite end of the cable where a pair of terminals are supported by a second connector body and enclosed in a shield collar. The shield collar has an extension that engages the second end of the cable, to allow signals to be transmitted at greater than 10 GHz with substantially lower loss than a traditional FR4 circuit board.

High speed bypass cable assembly

A wire to board connector is provided for connecting cables of cable bypass assemblies to circuitry mounted on a circuit board. The connector has a structure that maintains the geometry of the cable through the connector. The connector includes a pair of edge coupled conductive signal terminals and a ground shield to which the signal terminals are broadside coupled. The connector includes a pair of ground terminals aligned with the signal terminals and both sets of terminals have J-shaped contact portions that flex linearly when the connector is inserted into a receptacle. In another embodiment, the signal terminal contact portions are supported by a compliant member that may deflect when the connectors engage contact pads on a substrate.

Wire to board connectors suitable for use in bypass routing assemblies

A connector for use in a free-standing connector port for mating with an external pluggable module is disclosed. The connector has terminals that extend lengthwise of the connector so that cables may be terminated to the terminals and the terminals and cable generally are horizontally aligned together. The connector includes a housing and a pair of connecting elements that flank a card-receiving slot of the connector. The cables exit from the rear of the connector elements and from the connector port. The connector elements engage the connector port to fix the connector in place within the connector port.

A cable bypass assembly is disclosed for use in providing a high speed transmission line for connecting a board mounted connector of an electronic device to a chip on the device board. The bypass cable assembly has a structure that permits it, where it is terminated to the board mounted connector and the chip member, or closely proximate thereto to replicate closely the geometry of the cable. The connector terminals are arranged in alignment with the cable signal conductors and shield extensions are provided so that shielding can be provided up to and over the termination between the cable signal conductors and the board connector terminal tails. Likewise, a similar termination structure is provided at the opposite end of the cable where a pair of terminals are supported by a second connector body and enclosed in a shield collar. The shield collar has an extension that engages the second end of the cable.

A cable-circuit board assembly is disclosed for use in providing a high speed transmission line for connecting electronic devices together. The circuit board is joined to a ground extension member that extends rearwardly of the circuit board and between sets of wires that are terminated to respective surfaces of the circuit board. The extension portion places a ground plane in the termination area of the connector, rear of the trailing edge of the circuit board to provide shielding between pairs of wires on opposite sides of the paddle card where the cable shields are cut back.

Ground shield for circuit board terminations

A cable assembly including a cable with at least one connector terminated to an end of the cable. The cable includes at least one pair of signal wires and a grounding member that extends the length of the cable. The signal wires and grounding member are terminated to a connector and specifically terminated to two signal terminals and one ground terminal of the connector. These wires are terminated to tail portions of the terminals which are enclosed in an insulative material that defines a body portion of the connector housing. The ground terminal has two contact portions that extend along the exterior of the connector housing body portion, while the signal terminals have contact portions that extend lengthwise of the connector housing. The signal terminal contact portions are enclosed within an extension of the connector housing and the extension and body portions are themselves enclosed in a metal grounding shell. The grounding shell engages the ground contacts at one end and has two contact arms integrally formed therewith that extend into the interior of the connector housing between the signal terminal contact portions.

High speed, shielded cable assembly

A connector interface is provided with a body portion extending between two mating ends and is suitable for providing an interface between a cable and an electronic device. The connector includes a printed circuit board as its terminal and the circuit board extends through the body portion and has first and second mating edges that extend past the body portion of the housing at the mating ends. These mating edges permit the use of edge card technology to simplify the connector assembly and cost. One of the mating edges is enclosed by an extension portion of the connector housing such that the extension defines a receptacle that accommodates an opposing connector, such as a plug end of a cable assembly.

A terminating connector for a data transmission cable, wherein the cable is of a known characteristic impedance and is of the type having a signal carrying conductor and a shield. The connector is typically arranged to mate with a complementary connector of a backplane. An overmolded subassembly of the connector includes a first terminal electrically coupled at one end thereof to the shield, and a second terminal electrically coupled at one end thereof to the signal carrying conductor. A dielectric insert is disposed between the first and second terminals. The insert is dimensioned and has a dielectric constant such that the characteristic impedance of the subassembly substantially matches the characteristic impedance of the cable. The subassembly may be secured to a surrounding housing.

Impedance matched cable assembly

A modular electrical terminating connector for data transmission cables of the type having signal carrying conductors, drain wires and a shield. The connector passes through a ground plate and includes a housing that mates with a complementary connector assembly of a backplane. Individual overmolded subassemblies for terminating each cable are detachably coupled to the housing. The subassemblies latch to the ground plate, and provide a ground path from the cable shield to the ground plate. The subassemblies are individually detachable, thereby enabling individual cables to be disconnected and serviced without disconnecting other cables of the same connector.

Modular terminating connector with frame ground

A terminating connector for a data transmission cable, wherein the cable is of a known characteristic impedance and is of the type having a signal carrying conductor and a shield. The connector is typically arranged to mate with a complementary connector of a backplane. An overmolded subassembly of the connector includes a first terminal electrically coupled at one end thereof to the shield, and a second terminal electrically coupled at one end thereof to the signal carrying conductor. A dielectric insert is disposed between the first and second terminals. The insert is dimensioned and has a dielectric constant such that the characteristic impedance of the subassembly substantially matches the characteristic impedance of the cable. The subassembly also includes a latch mechanism for latching to a surrounding housing.
