In a run-length limited encoding method used in an optical data storage system for encoding input data of two bits into corresponding output data of five bits, a minimum run-length of zeroes (0's) in a stream of the output data is 3; a maximum run-length of zeroes (0's) in the stream of the output data is 11; and the number of 1 included in binary numbers of five bits expressing the corresponding output data is 1 or 0. In the encoding method, the input data of two bits is one of &ldquo;00&rdquo;, &ldquo;01&rdquo;, &ldquo;10&rdquo; and &ldquo;11&rdquo;; and the corresponding output data is one of &ldquo;10000&rdquo;, &ldquo;01000&rdquo;, &ldquo;00100&rdquo; and &ldquo;00010&rdquo;.
