The invention relates to diols derived from 5-hydroxymethyl furfural, diformyl furan, or derivatives thereof. The invention further relates to diglycidyl ethers derived from the diols of the invention, curable coating compositions containing the diglycidyl ethers, and objects coated with the curable coating compositions. Monomers from biomass

Photodegradable polymers derived from biomass are provided, together with methods of making and methods of using the polymers. The photodegradable polymers can be derived from at least a first monomeric unit and a second monomeric unit and an optional third monomeric unit. The first monomeric unit is a dicarboxylic acid and includes a furan group and the second monomeric unit includes a nitrobenzyl group. Methods of recycling the polymers including irradiating the polymers to yield recycled monomers and oligomers are also disclosed.

Beta-amino acids and methods intermediates for making same

A method for the preparation of .beta.-amino acid compounds is provided. The method includes contacting an amine nucleophile with an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated amide compound in the presence of a chiral Lewis acid complex. The chiral Lewis acid complex is formed from an azophilic metal salt and a chiral bisoxazolinylmethane compound. The selective amidolysis of one enantiomer of the .beta.-aminoamide product is also described.

The method includes reacting a diarylaminopropanediol with a reducing agent to form a diarylaminopropanol compound and/or contacting a serine ester derivative with an aryl metal reagent to form diarylaminopropanediol. The method includes contacting an olefinic compound or a vicinal dihydroxy compound with oxygen in the presence of a protic organic solvent, an inorganic oxide catalyst and a peroxidant such as hydrogen peroxide or an peralkanoic acid. The inorganic oxide catalyst includes an oxide of tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, vanadium, tantalum, titanium, or yttrium.
