The vehicle system may also include a clearing duct that bypasses the plenum and connects the tube and arrangement, and a controller configured to block passageways between the plenum and cabin duct, and to activate a blower of the arrangement to build pressure within the plenum and clearing duct to clear the tube.

A combining air-temperature monitor includes a faceted central shaft, a plurality of air-foil rings positioned about the faceted central shaft and a mixing zone proximate the faceted central shaft. An orifice extends between the first end and the second end. A semi-circular surface is disposed at the second end. A comfort system is provided for a motor vehicle. A seat occupancy sensor determines whether a third row zone is occupied. At least one flow controller is provided in the floor duct for controllably supplying the conditioned airflow to at least the third row outlet. If the third row zone is occupied, then a second row outlet and the third row outlet are turned on to supply a conditioned airflow to a front seat zone, a second row zone, and the third row zone. If the third row zone is not occupied, then the third row outlet is closed off. If the second row zone is not occupied, then the second and third row outlets are closed off. If occupied, then the second row outlet is turned on until a desired comfort level is achieved in the second row zone.

An air conditioning system for a start-stop vehicle employs a compressor with a variable displacement. A controller determines a normal Climate Thermal Load (CTL) value for controlling a variable stroke of the variable displacement compressor. A stop event is detected in response to a speed of the vehicle and the occurrence of a predetermined deceleration. During the stop event, the variable stroke is increased by an amount determined in response to the normal CTL value, the speed of the vehicle, and a measure of the deceleration of the vehicle so that an evaporator temperature within the air conditioning system is allowed to decrease while the vehicle is stopping so that climate comfort can be maintained even while the engine is shut off during the subsequent time that the vehicle is stopped.

Optimized cooling for vehicle with start-stop technology

An air duct for an automotive vehicle is blow molded with an elongated, hollow structural member to be used as a portion of a body of the vehicle. The structural member has an inner wall defining an elongated cavity communicating with first and second access holes at respective longitudinal positions along the structural member. A parison comprised of a thermally insulating material is inserted into the internal cavity. A source of inflation gas is connected to a mouth portion or the parison. The parison is heated and inflated within the internal cavity to an expanded shape to form the air duct disposed against the inner wall and spanning the first and second access holes. The air duct at one of the access holes is configured as an air inlet. The air duct at the other one of the access holes is configured as an air outlet.

A climate control duct architecture having partitions to provide effective distribution of air immediately as it exits the HVAC. By strategic positioning and configuring of the partitions the duct architecture may be tuned to provide maximum console airflow and desired system airflow distribution with a minimum amount of interference to the airflow due to turbulence.

A novel deionization filter for removing ions from a coolant in an electric fuel cell vehicle cooling system is disclosed. The deionization filter includes a filter housing having a coolant inlet port, through which the coolant enters the filter housing; and a coolant outlet port, through which the coolant exits the filter housing. An ion exchange bed having positively-charged and negatively-charged ion exchange resin beads is provided in the filter housing for removing negative and positive ions, respectively, from the coolant. At least one filter assembly is typically provided in the filter housing for filtering particles from the coolant.

Deionization filter for fuel cell vehicle coolant

A flush and fill process is used to ready a fuel cell cooling circuit for initial use. An external flushing system releasably connected to the cooling circuit circulates flushing coolant through the cooling circuit to remove contaminants from the wetted surfaces of the cooling circuit before the fuel cell is put into use. The flushing system includes a pump for circulating the flushing coolant through the cooling circuit, filters for removing contaminants from the coolant and a heater for elevating the temperature of the coolant. Following the flushing process to remove contaminants, the flushing system is disconnected from the cooling circuit and the cooling circuit is filled with fresh coolant.

Readying cooling circuits for use in fuel cells

A particle filter for a fuel cell coolant is disclosed. The particle filter includes a filter housing having an upstream end for receiving the coolant and a downstream end for discharging the coolant. A filter element is provided in the filter housing. A pressure gauge is operably connected to the upstream end of the filter housing for measuring and indicating a pressure of the coolant corresponding to a degree of blockage of the filter element.

Particle filter for fuel cell coolant

A novel pump pressure limiting method for preventing coolant in a cooling system from reaching pressures that exceed predetermined system coolant pressure limits. The method includes reducing the system coolant pressure, as needed to prevent system over-pressurization, by reducing the operational speed of a coolant pump used to pump the coolant through the system. In one embodiment, the system coolant pressure is determined directly, by measurement of the pressure of the coolant in the system typically using pressure sensors. The operational speed of the coolant pump is then reduced until the system coolant pressure decreases to within the predetermined pressure limits. In another embodiment, the system pressure is determined indirectly, by obtaining pressure-indicating data such as coolant temperature. The coolant system pressure is then correlated with the coolant temperature or other data and then the operational speed of the coolant pump is reduced accordingly.

Pump pressure limiting method

The present invention is a system and method to significantly reduce noise associated with air-moving devices such as an axial flow fan using a fan shroud and barrel combination with built in silencers such as Helmholtz resonators. The invention can be applied to a variety of applications such as a thermal management system for a fuel cell powered vehicle. The resonator can be a hollow cavity in networks attached to an outer or inner barrel or shroud and tuned to reduce noise at predetermined noise frequency ranges within the airflow. The invention can also attach stator members on the inner surface of the outer barrel to further reduce noise. Additional sound absorbing material, such as steel wool, can be disposed within the resonator cavity.
