Methods and associated systems for reducing permeability of fractures in deep underground formations are provided. Thermal responsive fluid is used that transitions to a gel upon exposure to heat generated by one or more subsequently added exothermic reactants. Exothermic reaction is utilized to control the temperature at the targeted stratum to and affect the gelation time and gel propagation in the porous medium.

Thermal responsive fluid injection method

A method of enhancing recovery of hydrocarbons from a formation includes providing a carbonated fluid, reacting a first salt solution with a second salt solution to provide heat, displacing carbon dioxide from the carbonated fluid, sweeping the formation with the displaced carbon dioxide, mixing the displaced carbon dioxide with at least a portion of the hydrocarbons in the vertical regions, thereby producing a mixture, and producing the mixture via a production well in the formation, thereby enhancing recovery of the hydrocarbons from the formation. A system for controlling the release of carbon dioxide from carbonated water and enhancing oil recovery from a hydrocarbon bearing formation includes an injection system in fluid communication with an injection well that is in fluid communication with a production well via a hydraulic connection.

Enhanced oil recovery using carbonated water and two salt solutions

Described is a method for downhole sequestration of carbon dioxide. A heating assembly is lowered into a wellbore within a geological formation. Carbon dioxide is injected into the wellbore and heated to a predetermined temperature using the heating assembly. The heated carbon dioxide is allowed to migrate from the wellbore into the geological formation for permanent storage. A monitoring operation is performed to detect the formation of gas hydrates within the wellbore.

Method for downhole sequestration of carbon dioxide in the form of gas hydrate

A method and system for labeling and identifying a sample, including a rock core sample, after determining a physical primary label has been compromised is provided. The method includes labeling the sample by placing a physical primary label on the sample or sample container, creating a first rollout image of the sample for a secondary label, and storing the first rollout image in a secondary label digital database with a sample identifier. The method continues for identifying the sample after determining the physical primary label has been compromised by creating a secondary rollout image of the sample and searching the secondary label digital database using the second rollout image to create a plurality of matching scores using a machine learning or deep learning image matching technique. The matching scores are then evaluated to determine an identify of a sample and the sample is re-labelled using a replacement primary label.

A composition and methods are provided for stimulating a well with nanobubbles. An exemplary method includes obtaining a stimulation fluid and generating a nanobubbles solution, wherein the nanobubbles solution includes nano-sized bubbles in the stimulation fluid. A method for sequestering COin a subterranean formation and a method for sequestering COin a subterranean formation during an enhanced oil recovery treatment include preparing a solution comprising COand from 0.01% by weight (wt. %) to 10 wt. % of a COsoluble alkoxylate surfactant based on the total weight of CO, processing the solution through a dispersing unit in fluid communication with an injection well, and injecting the dispersion into the injection well of the formation, thereby sequestering COin the formation. The method for sequestering COin a subterranean formation during an enhanced oil recovery treatment includes introducing an enhanced oil recovery treatment to the formation. A system for sequestering COin a formation includes an injection well in fluid communication with a formation, an injection unit, and a dispersing unit that is in fluid communication with the injection unit and the injection well.

Surfactant formulation and method for water flood assisted COsequestration

Described is a method for enhanced carbon dioxide (CO) sequestration in geological formations. The method includes dissolving COin a low salinity fluid to form a CO-brine solution. The low salinity fluid includes sodium (Na) ions and sulfate (SO) ions. The CO-brine solution is injected into a geological formation, and the COreacts with the geological formation to produce solid carbonate minerals for COsequestration.

Method for enhanced storage of carbon dioxide in geological formations

A method for sealing a high permeability region in a reservoir is provided. The method includes injecting a gel precursor solution into a high permeability region in a reservoir, injecting a sodium nitrite solution proximate to the high permeability region, and injecting an ammonium chloride solution proximate to the high permeability region. The ammonium chloride solution and the sodium nitrite solution are mixed proximate to the high permeability region. The ammonium chloride solution and the sodium nitrite solution are allowed to react, increasing the temperature of the reservoir proximate to the high permeability region. The gel precursor solution is allowed to react to form a solid gel in the high permeability region.

Mineralizing carbon dioxide for storage may occur in a wellbore. For example, a method of mineralizing carbon dioxide may include: introducing, through a first wellbore to a subterranean formation, a first solution including a metal salt and a metal catalyst; introducing a second solution including a brine, wherein the second solution has nanobubble carbon dioxide at least partially dispersed therein, and wherein the second solution is introduced after introduction of the first solution; injecting carbon dioxide gas thereby at least partially dispersing the carbon dioxide gas in the first solution, thereby forming dissolved carbon dioxide; generating mineralized carbon dioxide from the dissolved carbon dioxide, wherein the generating includes catalytically reacting the metal salt and the dissolved carbon dioxide using the metal catalyst, thereby forming the mineralized carbon dioxide; and depositing the mineralized carbon dioxide within the subterranean formation.

Enhanced hydrocarbon recovery methods may include use of carbonated aqueous fluids. Methods for enhanced hydrocarbon recovery may include: introducing a carbonated aqueous fluid into a subterranean reservoir, the carbonated aqueous fluid including carbon dioxide; introducing a first salt solution and a second salt solution into the subterranean reservoir after introducing the carbonated aqueous fluid; contacting the first salt solution with the second salt solution in the subterranean reservoir under conditions where the first salt and the second salt undergo an exothermic reaction; and heating the carbonated aqueous fluid with heat produced via the exothermic reaction; wherein at least a portion of the carbon dioxide is released from the carbonated aqueous fluid upon heating and migrates from a lower portion to an upper portion of the subterranean reservoir, and a decarbonated saline solution is generated from the carbonated aqueous fluid from which the carbon dioxide is released.

In-reservoir carbon dioxide release for enhanced hydrocarbon recovery

A method includes developing a lab-scale representative correlation between wettability index and tracer test return curve data for core samples, obtaining tracer test return curve data for rock at a well of interest, and determining a wettability index of the rock in situ using the representative correlation and the tracer test return curve data for the well. A method includes obtaining core samples of a rock representative of a formation of interest, determining a wettability index of each of the core samples, performing a tracer test on each of the core samples and obtaining tracer return curve data for each of the core samples, building a correlation between the wettability index and the tracer return curve data of the core samples, running a single-well tracer test at a well, obtaining tracer return curve data for the well, and determining a wettability index for the rock of the well.

In-situ wettability measurement using multiple partitioning tracers

A method for increasing COsequestration efficiency in depleted reservoirs using a COthickener is provided. The method may include the steps of introducing a thickened COmixture into the depleted reservoir, where the thickened COmixture comprises a mixture of COand a COthickener. The method may include using COis in a liquid or supercritical state upon introduction into the depleted reservoir. The method may also include the step of using a COthickener comprising a methyl acrylate-based copolymer, a COsolvent, and a solvent.

Enhancing COsequestration efficiency with CO-soluble thickener

A method for recovering hydrocarbons from a hydrocarbon bearing formation includes introducing a first solution having a first salt into the hydrocarbon bearing formation. A second solution is also introduced into the hydrocarbon bearing formation, wherein the second solution has a second salt and a foaming agent. The first salt and the second salt produces a nitrogen gas, and the nitrogen gas and the foaming agent produces a foam formed in-situ within the formation. The foam forms a foam barrier, and carbon dioxide is introduced into the formation to form a gas cap, wherein the carbon dioxide gas cap has a gas front that is separated from the hydrocarbons by the foam barrier.

Insitu foam generation to fasten and increase oil production rates in gravity drainage COgas injection

A method and a system for oil recovery are provided. An exemplary method includes injecting thickened carbon dioxide (CO) into the top of a reservoir containing oil. An interface is formed between the thickened COand the oil. The oil is mobilized by the thickened CO. The mobilized oil is recovered with a recovery well drilled below the reservoir.

Thickened COin gravity drainage gas injection processes

A method to improve the efficiency of a gravity drainage CO2 gas injection process includes the steps of: (a) injecting a slug proximate to an underground reservoir, wherein the slug comprises a polymer component and an inorganic metal ion type crosslinking agent that are configured to form an in situ weak gel in the reservoir to block high permeability channels in a pay zone of the reservoir; and (b) continuously injecting COgas at a top of the pay zone to form a gas cap at the top of the reservoir and to cause the gas cap to advance rapidly towards a producing well located below to provide a uniform sweep of the gas cap.
