A field portable device for determining the unconfined compressive strength of a soil sample includes a sample holder, a heating device, a scale, a spectrometer, and a microprocessor. The sample holder receives a soil sample. The heating device dries the soil sample for a specified time. The scale measures a weight of the soil sample and a dried weight of the soil sample. The spectrometer performs laser induced breakdown spectroscopy on the soil sample and generates spectral emission intensities of the soil sample. The microprocessor calculates a bulk density and a water content of the soil sample, actuates the spectrometer to generate the spectral emission intensities. The microprocessor applies the spectral emission intensities, the bulk density and the 10 water content to a trained machine learning regressor combined with an adaptive boosting classifier to predict the unconfined compressive strength of the soil sample.

An electrode includes an electrically conductive substrate and a layer of a molybdenum-doped zinc/cobalt oxide (ZnCoMoO). The surface of the electrically conductive substrate is at least partially covered by the layer of ZnCoMoO, where x is a positive number equal to or less than about 0.1, and the layer of the ZnCoMoOincludes spherical-shaped particles. The electrode has a Tafel slope from 75 millivolts per second (mV/s) to 115 mV/s, and a potential of 0.27 to 0.30 volts relative to the reversible hydrogen electrode (V) at a current density of about 50 mA/cmfor a duration of at least 40 hours.

Aspects of the present disclosure are directed towards a method of making a scandium metal-doped nanoparticle. The method includes mixing a cobalt salt, an iron salt, and an acid in water to form a solution including CoFeO; mixing a nickel-iron oxide solution and a scandium oxide solution to form a solution including NiScFeO; mixing the cobalt iron oxide solution and the nickel scandium iron oxide solution to form a sol-gel mixture including CoFeO/(NiScFeO)(0&#x2264;x&#x2264;5); adjusting the pH of the sol-gel mixture 6 to 8 with a base to form a first mixture; heating the first mixture to form a powder, and calcining the powder to form the scandium metal-doped nanoparticle of formula CoFeO/(NiScFeO)(0&#x2264;x&#x2264;5). The present disclosure also describes an electrode including the scandium metal-doped nanoparticles. The electrode may be used in magnetic supercapacitors.

The present disclosure relates to a method of disinfecting a fluid comprising at least one live microbial organism. The method includes contacting the fluid comprising the at least one microbial organism with an effective amount of a photo-catalyst while exposing the fluid and the photo-catalyst to light from at least one light source with a wavelength of about 300-550 nm to reduce the number of the at least one live microbial organism to a predetermined level. The photo-catalyst comprises tungsten trioxide nanoparticles doped with palladium nanoparticles, and the palladium nanoparticles are present in an amount of about 0.1-5% of the total weight of the tungsten trioxide nanoparticles and the palladium nanoparticles.
