A method of operating a power plant that includes receiving a measured frequency of a power network to which the power plant is connected, and determining whether the measured frequency falls within a first frequency sub-band that overlaps a network-defined frequency deadband. Based at least in part on the measured frequency, a first control signal is output, indicative of either: a first power offset for application to a baseline frequency curve for the power plant to generate a set point for controlling a power characteristic of the power plant; or a set point for controlling a power characteristic of the power plant, the set point being based on a first power offset applied to a baseline frequency curve for the power plant.

Methods and systems for controlling a power plant during network frequency fluctuations

A method is provided for determining a power production capacity of at least one wind turbine connected to a power grid. The method includes receiving, e.g. from a power grid control center, a power production forecast for the at least one wind turbine, and then monitoring an actual grid frequency of the power grid. Based on the actual grid frequency and a nominal grid frequency, a frequency support power reserve is determined. The power production capacity is then determined in dependence of the determined frequency support power reserve and the power production forecast.

Accordingly, a source of power is managed between several alternative sources and the external power grid to meet plant operator defined criteria when maintaining power in various wind speed conditions.

The invention relates to a method for controlling power generation from a power plant which comprises a plurality of power generating units. The method involves setting a maximal allowed power production for each power generating unit in a selection of one or more power generating units of second priority to a non-zero value, where the maximal allowed power production is determined dependent on whether a first power production gap is greater or less than zero and dependent on a comparison of the first power production gap with a second available power production capability of the selection of the one or more power generating units of the second priority.

Prioritization of power generation in a power plant comprising wind turbine generators

A method for controlling a power output of a power generating unit is disclosed. An accumulated power output of the power generating unit during a predefined time interval is forecasted. An actual power output of the power generating unit is measured during the predefined time interval, and an actual accumulated power output is estimated for the predefined time interval on the basis of the measured actual power output of the power generating unit. A difference between the forecasted accumulated power output and the estimated actual accumulated power output is derived. The power output of the power generating unit is boosted, in the case that the estimated actual accumulated power output is below the forecasted accumulated power output, and the difference between the forecasted accumulated power output and the estimated actual accumulated power output is larger than a predefined threshold value.

Aspects of the present invention relate to a method for controlling one or more wind turbine generators. The method comprises: receiving a trigger signal, and implementing an active power boost mode during a predetermined time period in response to receiving the trigger signal. The active power boost mode comprises: disregarding further trigger signals; and generating one or more upper active power limits for each of the one or more wind turbine generators, wherein, during at least a first portion of the predetermined time period, the one or more upper active power limits are fixed at an active power boost level that is greater than a nominal active power level of the one or more wind turbine generators.

Aspects of the present invention relate to a method for controlling a renewable power plant connected to a power network to reduce deviation of a measured frequency of the power network from a target frequency. The method comprises determining a forecasted power gradient over a forecast interval defined between a first time point and a second time point, and, at a third time point during the forecast interval, controlling the power plant to output active power according to a minimum active power level if the measured frequency at the third time point is below the target frequency, controlling the power plant to output active power according to a maximum active power level if the measured frequency at the third time point is above the target frequency. The maximum and minimum active power levels are based on the forecasted power gradient.

Controlling a current injected to a power grid from a renewable power plant, in response to a voltage event in the power grid. At least a current at a point of common coupling between the renewable power plant and the power grid is determined and provided to a power plant controller (PPC). The PPC derives individual current setpoint corrections for at least some wind turbines, based on the determined current, and dispatches each derived current setpoint correction to wind turbine controllers of the corresponding wind turbines. The wind turbine controllers control a current output of the respective wind turbines, based on measurements of current and/or voltage at a point of connection between the wind turbine and an internal grid of the renewable power plant, and by taking into account the dispatched current setpoint correction.

Embodiments provide for the control of a power plant including several generators by setting a reference frame for the generators with a first and a second axis; measuring a grid demand voltage at the shared connection point; determining active and reactive currents required at the shared connection point based on the grid demand voltage and grid codes; transforming the active and reactive currents required at the shared connection point to the reference frame where the first axis defines a first current set point and the second axis defines a second current set point; and dispatching the first and second current set points to generator controllers associated with each generator. Methods and apparatus for reducing peak power consumption of a grid connected power plant having a plurality of wind turbines. In response to determining that a power production value of the power plant is below a power threshold, one method includes: after a first time delay of a first group of one or more wind turbines, control the first group to operate in a power saving mode for a predefined first power saving period; and after a first time delay of a second group of one or more other wind turbines, control the second group to operate in the power saving mode for a predefined second power saving period. The first time delay of the first group is less than the first time delay of the second group and the power saving mode inhibits a power consuming activity for the wind turbines operating in the power saving mode.

A method for preparing a wind power facility for a transition from a first mode of operation to a second mode of operation includes the steps of specifying a set of operational parameters to be applied by the wind power facility in connection with the second mode of operation, said specified set of operational parameters being available for the wind power facility in response to a provided transition triggering signal, and providing the transition triggering signal and applying the specified set of operational parameters in the wind power facility in response thereto, wherein a subset of the specified set of operational parameters is applied in each of a plurality of wind turbine generators in response to the provided transition triggering signal. The first mode of operation may involve a normal mode of operation whereas the second mode of operation may involve an island mode of operation.
