A hardware module is provided in an execution unit and is responsive to execution of multiple instances of a new type of instruction to perform a plurality of reductions in parallel. The hardware module comprises: a first accumulator storing first state associated with a first of the reductions; and a second accumulator storing second state associated with a second of the reductions. Upon execution of each of the multiple instances of the first type of instruction: an input value for the respective instance is provided to a first processing circuit of the hardware module such that the first processing circuit performs a first type of operation to update the first state; and the same input value is provided to the second processing circuit of the hardware module such that the second processing circuit performs a second type of operation to update the second state.

Floating point norm instruction

A processing device comprising: a control register configured to store a scaling factor; at least one execution unit configured to execute instructions to perform arithmetic operations on input floating-point numbers provided according to a first floating-point format, wherein each of the input floating-point numbers provided according to the first floating-point format comprises a predetermined number of bits, wherein the at least one execution unit is configured to, in response to execution of an instance of a first of the instructions: perform processing of a first set of the input floating-point numbers to generate a result value, the result value provided in a further format and comprising more the predetermined number of bits, enabling representation of a greater range of values than is representable in the first floating-point format; and apply the scaling factor specified in the control register to increase or decrease an exponent of the result value.

Processing device for intermediate value scaling

A processor comprising a barrel-threaded execution unit for executing concurrent threads, and one or more register files comprising a respective set of context registers for each concurrent thread. One of the one or more register files further comprises a set of shared weights registers common to some or all of the concurrent threads. The types of instructions defined in the instruction set of the processor include an arithmetic instruction having operands specifying a source and a destination from amongst a respective set of arithmetic registers of the thread in which the arithmetic instruction is executed. The execution unit is configured so as, in response to the opcode of the arithmetic instruction, to perform an operation comprising multiplying an input from the source by at least one of the weights from at least one of the shared weights registers, and to place a result in the destination.

There is disclosed a method of controlling the frequency of a clock signal in a processor. The method selects a first clock generator to provide a processor clock signal for executing an application. If a threshold event is detected, a second clock generator is selected. The method reduces the frequency of a clock signal generated by the first clock generator while a processor clock signal is being provided for execution of an application from the second clock generator. The second clock generator generates a clock at a lower speed than the first clock generator. After a predetermined time, the first clock generator is reselected to provide the processor clock signal. The threshold detection is repeated until an optimum clock frequency is discovered.

Controlling a processor clock

A processor comprising: a register file comprising a group of operand registers for holding data values, each operand register being a fixed number of bits in length for holding a respective data value of that length; and processing logic comprising floating point logic for performing floating point operations on data values in the register file, the floating point logic is configured to process the fixed number of bits in the respective data value according to a floating point format comprising a set of mantissa bits and a set of exponent bits. The processing logic is operable to select between a plurality of different variants of the floating point format, at least some of the variants having a different size sets of mantissa bits and exponent bits relative to one another.

Use of multiple different variants of floating point number formats in floating point operations on a per-operand basis

A processor is disclosed including: a barrel-threaded execution unit for executing concurrent threads, and a repeat cache shared between the concurrent threads. The processor's instruction set includes a repeat instruction which takes a repeat count operand. When the repeat cache is not claimed and the repeat instruction is executed in a first thread, a portion of code is cached from the first thread into the repeat cache, the state of the repeat cache is changed to record it as claimed, and the cached code is executed a number of times. When the repeat instruction is then executed in a further thread, then the already-cached portion of code is again executed a respective number of times, each time from the repeat cache. For each of the first and further instructions, the repeat count operand in the respective instruction specifies the number of times to execute the cached code.

A processor having an instruction set including a load-store instruction having operands specifying, from amongst the registers in at least one register file, a respective destination of each of two load operations, a respective source of a store operation, and a pair of address registers arranged to hold three memory addresses, the three memory addresses being a respective load address for each of the two load operations and a respective store address for the store operation. The load-store instruction further includes three stride operands each specifying a respective stride value for each of the two load addresses and one store address, wherein at least some possible values of each stride operand specify the respective stride value by specifying one of a plurality of fields within a stride register in one of the one or more register files, each field holding a different stride value.

A hardware module comprising circuitry configured to: store a sequence of n bits in a register of the hardware module; generate a signed integer comprising a magnitude component and a sign bit by: if the most significant bit of the sequence of n bits is equal to one: set each of the n&#x2212;1 of the most significant bits of the magnitude component to be equal to the corresponding bit of the n&#x2212;1 least significant bits of the sequence of n bits; and set the sign bit to be zero; if the most significant bit of the sequence of n bits is equal to zero: set each of the n&#x2212;1 of the most significant bits of the magnitude component to be equal to the inverse of the corresponding bit of the n&#x2212;1 least significant bits of the sequence of n bits; and set the sign bit to be one.

Hardware module for converting numbers

A hardware module comprising at least one of: one or more field programmable gate arrays and one or more application specific integrated circuits configured to: receive a number in floating-point representation at a first precision level, the number comprising an exponent and a first mantissa; apply a first random number to the first mantissa to generate a first carry; truncate the first mantissa to a level specified by a second precision level; add the first carry to the least significant bit of the mantissa truncated to the level specified by the second precision level to form a mantissa for the number in floating-point representation at the second precision level.

Converting floating point numbers to reduce the precision

A method and apparatus for handling overflow conditions resulting from arithmetic operations involving floating point numbers. An indication is stored as part of a thread's context indicating one of two possible modes for handling overflow conditions. In a first mode, a result of an arithmetic operation is set to the limit representable in the floating point format. In a second mode, a result of an arithmetic operation is set to a NaN.

A processor comprising an execution unit, memory and one or more register files. The execution unit is configured to execute instances of machine code instructions from an instruction set. The types of instruction defined in the instruction set include a double-load instruction for loading from the memory to at least one of the one or more register files. The execution unit is configured so as, when the load instruction is executed, to perform a first load operation strided by a fixed stride, and a second load operation strided by a variable stride, the variable stride being specified in a variable stride register in one of the one or more register files.
