A novel material is provided herein which is suitable for use in a precursor of a polymer coating material that coats a polymer on a surface of a base material to provide the base material with surface modification and/or functionality assignment. A composite material characterized in that a compound having a polymerization initiation site containing a halogen group is incorporated in a crosslinked structure comprising a catechol derivative or a phenol derivative represented by the following formula (I). In the formula (I), R may be interrupted by an oxygen molecule and represents a hydrocarbon group with 2 to 20 carbons that has at least one double bond site, and A represents a hydrogen atom, a hydroxyl group, or an alkoxy group with 1 to 20 carbons.

Provided are: surface modification method for imparting slidability to surface of elastic body such as vulcanized rubber or thermoplastic elastomer without using expensive self-lubricating resin; surface-modified elastic body with polymer brush formed on its surface; and gasket for injector and injector formed of surface-modified elastic body. The surface modification method applies to surface of thermoplastic elastomer or vulcanized rubber. The surface modification method comprises the step of forming hydroxyl group on surface of to-be-modified object such as rubber so that water contact angle of the surface becomes 8 to 50 degrees smaller than original water contact angle in unmodified condition, the step of forming polymerization initiation site by subjecting the hydroxyl group to action of secondary or tertiary organic halide, and the step of growing polymer brush on the surface of to-be-modified object by subjecting monomer to radical polymerization at the polymerization initiation site acting as a point of initiation.

A method for producing a polymer nanocomposite, includes: after expanding an interlayer space of a layered inorganic compound using an organic onium salt, immobilizing a radical polymerization initiator having a group represented by formula (1) on an interlayer surface of the layered inorganic compound via a covalent bond; and carrying out surface-initiated radical polymerization in a monomer from the immobilized radical polymerization initiator. Preferably, in the radical polymerization initiator having the group represented by the general formula (1), at least one of X1 to X3 in the formula is a chlorine atom, or R1 in the formula is a C1-25 alkylene group or a C2-25 alkenylene group optionally interrupted by an oxygen atom or an ester group and optionally substituted by a phenyl group: R1 represents a C1-25 alkylene group, a C2-25 alkenylene group, a C5-8 cycloalkylene group, or a C6-12 arylene group.
