A reamer includes: (a) an axially-distal-end small-diameter portion; (b) a guide portion which is axially adjacent to the small-diameter portion; (c) at least one flute which is formed in an outer circumferential surface of the reamer and which extends from the axially distal end of the reamer toward the axially distal end of the reamer; and (d) at least one land surface which is circumferentially adjacent to the flute. The land has a cutting blade portion formed therein in the axially-distal-end small-diameter portion. A first radial distance from an axis of the reamer to a radically outer end of the cutting blade portion is larger than a second radial distance from the axis to the land surface in the axially-distal-end small-diameter portion. The first radial distance is smaller than a third radial distance from the axis to the land surface in the guide portion.

A reamer including; a generally cylindrical cutter body having (a) a flute formed in an outer circumferential surface of the cutter body and extending from an axially distal end of the cutter body toward an axially proximal end of the cutter body, (b) a cutting blade portion positioned at a longitudinally distal end of a downstream one of widthwise opposite edges of the flute as viewed in a rotating direction of the reamer, and (c) a guide portion having a guide surface which is circumferentially adjacent to the flute and which circumferentially extends over at least 240&deg; about an axis of the cutter body. The guide surface is a part of the outer circumferential surface of the cutter body.

Reamer with guide surface and method of finishing hole by using the same

In a method of processing a sealing surface of a casting to eliminate casting defects on or in the vicinity of the sealing surface, each of abrasive grains constituting a grindstone has a flat face formed on its distal end. The sealing surface of the casting is ground by the grindstone while the flat face of each abrasive grain is held parallel to the sealing surface of the casting. Consequently, a plastic flow layer is formed on the sealing surface of the casting. Blowholes present within a predetermined range of depth of the casting from the sealing surface are collapsed as the result of formation of the plastic flow layer.
