To edit data, a plurality of automatic processes are defined. Icons representing those processes may be displayed in a library frame of a display of the data editing system. The user may then select one or more of those processes by moving the corresponding icon from the library frame to an editing frame which also displays an image representing the data to be edited. When the user edits the data, each selected automatic process monitors the relationships between the data wherein, the corresponding icon provides a visual indication of the status of the automatic process. Preferably the progress of the automatic process is indicated by changes in the appearance of the corresponding icon. A generation frame may be provided on the display so that the user can generate new processes, represented by a corresponding icon, which may then be moved to the library frame or the editing frame. Icons may be grouped to permit simultaneous selection of a group of corresponding automatic processes.

Data editing method and apparatus therefor

A method and device for pattern processing whereby accurate and effective processing can be carried out as a user desires. A pattern processing device of this invention comprises an information input/output device, an information processing device, and a data storage device; wherein the information processing device comprises pattern processing means, significance describing means, characteristic information input means, characteristic information extraction means, characteristic information describing means, and pattern processing means making reference to characteristic information. Intentions of a user or characteristics of pattern elements or sets of pattern elements are described and added to the pattern data so that this characteristic information can be referred to when pattern data processing is carried out. Thus, it is possible to make accurate representation of pattern data in a computer, and it is also possible to generate or convert patterns as the user desires.

Method and apparatus for pattern data processing

The present invention provides a liquid crystal light modulation device which has a cell comprising a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent and which have electrodes and are opposed through a spacer, a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer which is enclosed in said cell and which has a phase series where a nematic phase (N*phase) or an isotropic phase (I phase) is shown on a just higher temperature side of a ferroelectric phase (smectic C* phase, Sc* phase) and two polarizing plates which sandwich the cell therebetween, liquid crystal molecules at one interface between the liquid crystal layer and the substrate being fixed to the substrate more weakly than liquid crystal molecules at the other interface between the liquid crystal and the substrate wherein the liquid crystal molecule weakly fixed is fixed to such an extent that inversion of spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystal molecule occurs upon application of an electrical field to the liquid crystal layer through the electrodes, orientation of the liquid crystal molecule at one interface and orientation of the liquid crystal molecule at the other interface can be either the state (a) of being nearly parallel to each other or the state (b) of crossing each other by the inversion of the spontaneous polarization and the two polarizing plates are arranged so that light transmittance is lower at the state (a) than at the state (b).
