Radio wave-transmitting wavelength-selective plate and method for producing same

A head-up display system comprising a transparent plate. A liquid crystal display generates a display light of information with a plane of polarization inclined by about 45&deg; relative to an image plane vertical axis. A first optical rotation layer is disposed on a first surface of the transparent plate, and receives the display light from the liquid crystal display and optically rotates the plane of polarization of the display light by about 90&deg;. A second optical rotation layer is between the image plane of the liquid crystal display and a second surface of the transparent plate, and optically rotates the plane of polarization of the display light by about 45&deg; and allows S-polarized light to emanate toward the transparent plate at Brewster's angle. The S-polarized light is reflected on the second surface and is directed toward an eye of an operator.

The invention relates to a frequency selective plate having a radio wave transparent property. The invention relates to a display system where polarized light rays from a display device impinge on a laminate at Brewster's angle or emerge therefrom at an angle equal to Brewster's angle. This laminate is a combination of a transparent platelike object and a functional film that is an optical rotatory film or a semitransparent film. The platelike object has a front major surface, facing the display device, and a back major surface. The display device has a polarizing member for polarizing light rays of the display device into S-wave or P-wave light rays. According to a first embodiment of the invention, the optical rotatory film is formed on the front or back major surface of the platelike object or in an inside of the platelike object, and S-wave light rays from the polarizing member are thrown against the front major surface of the laminate. With this, a part of the S-wave light rays is reflected from the front major surface of the laminate toward a viewer. The rest of the S-wave light rays is transmitted in the platelike object and converted into P-wave light rays by the optical rotatory film. Then, substantially all of the P-wave light rays emerge from the back major surface of the laminate into the air at an angle substantially equal to Brewster's angle of the platelike object or the optical rotatory member, which borders on the back major surface of the laminate. Thus, the double image phenomenon does not arise.

A laminated transparent structure for a reflective display which is used, for example, as a head-up display of an automotive vehicle. The laminated transparent structure comprises a glass plate. A transparent layer is bonded to the glass plate. An optical rotation film is disposed between the glass plate and the transparent layer. Additionally, a hot-melt adhesive is disposed between the optical rotation film and the glass plate to bond the optical rotation film to the glass plate.

An intermediate film is interposed between the inboard-side and outboard-side glass plates to bond the glass plates to each other. An optically functioning film such as a polarization-direction changing film is bonded to the outboard-side glass plate. At least one of the inboard-side glass plate, the outboard-side glass plate and the intermediate film is colored in a manner that a color difference between first and second parts of the laminate is not higher than 2.4, in which the first part includes the optically functioning film while the second part is other than the first part.

A head-up display system of an automotive vehicle, comprising outboard-side and inboard-side glass plates constituting a front windshield glass. An intermediate film is disposed between the outboard-side and inboard-side glass plates to bond the glass plates. A polarization-direction changing layer is secured to the inboard surface of the outboard-side glass plate. A Brewster's angle regulating film is secured to the inboard surface of the inboard-side glass plate. The Brewster's angle regulating film has a refractive index different from that of the glass plates. A displaying device is provided to generate a display light of information. Additionally, a light-polarizing device is provided to polarize the display light into S-wave. The display light having S-wave is incident at about Brewster's angle of the Brewster's angle regulating film to the front windshield glass so as to pass through the polarization-direction changing layer and to be reflected at the outboard surface of the outboard-side glass plate toward the side of the displaying device.

A method of inspecting the location of a polarization-direction changing film relative to a transparent plate at a predetermined position. The method comprises the following steps: (a) disposing a first polarizing plate to face a first surface of the transparent plate and at a standard position at which the first polarizing plate has inner and outer peripheries, in section, defining therebetween an area corresponding to a permissible range for location of a peripheral edge of the polarization-direction changing film; (b) disposing a second polarizing plate to face a second surface of the transparent plate, in which the polarization-direction changing film is located relative to the transparent plate; and (c) observing a locational relationship between the peripheral edge of the polarization-direction changing film and the area of the first polarizing plate through the second polarizing plate so as to make a judgment as to whether the peripheral edge of the. polarization-direction changing film is within the allowable range.

Method of inspecting location of optical film and system for carrying

A device for controlling transmittance of light therethrough includes first and second transparent substrates which are spaced from each other. The first substrate has at an end portion thereof a notch. First and second transparent electrode layers are respectively coated on inner surfaces of the first and second substrates for defining a space therebetween. The first layer is partially cut off so as to conform to a periphery of said notch. An electro-optically responsive material substantially fills up the space. The material is made so as to allow transmittance of light therethrough to change in response to voltages applied between the first and second layers. A terminal is received in said notch and said space, and is sized so as to be biased against the first substrate and the second layer so as to ensure an electrical contact between the terminal and the second layer.
