A data communication network provides techniques for handling frame discard of non-delineable flows. When a data flow is established, it is evaluated to determine whether a frame delimiter value is required and, if so, whether it is present. If the frame delimiter is required and missing, then the flow is declared non-delineable. If, subsequently, a congestion threshold is reached for this data flow, cells are discarded until a) a frame delimiter value is received, b) congestion drops below the threshold or c) a predetermined number of cells are discarded. These techniques provide frame discard handling mechanisms that alleviate the need for NOC personnel to intervene in problems caused by non-delineable frame discard flows.

Systems and methods for handling frame discard indication within cell-based data communication networks

The system and method of the present invention completes at least two calls originating from terminal equipment located at a premises and connected by a point-of-attachment having a single phone number to a public switched telephone network where a dial tone is provided to the premises. Multiple calls are now allowed with an analog interface to the public switched telephone network. At least two calls and control channel are combined into a modulated analog signal having a separate channel for each call and transmitted through a modulation/demodulation device as a modulated analog signal to the public switched telephone network. The modulated analog signal is split into respective calls and control channel. Each call is forwarded to a respective remote device based on the identity information and auxiliary information received through the control channel.

An integrated sub-rate multiplexing system and method optimizes use of transmission bandwidth in integrated networks. For example, transmission capacity of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is assigned to various traffic types according to the instantaneous needs, illustratively in an enhanced (T , T )-environment. When speech and data packets compete for bandwidth, under certain conditions portions of data are concatenated to the voice segment, increasing bandwidth efficiency.

Multiplexing system and method for integrated voice and data transmission on network

A plurality of ATM networks may be interconnected to allow communication of voice-band signals between them by using one or more PSTNs and a novel interface that converts ATM formatted data packets to a format usable by digital multiplication equipment (DCME). Such an interface thus allows the DCME to advantageously function as a gateway between the ATM network and PSTN by providing for optimum bandwidth usage between the networks. In an illustrative example of the invention, a DCME available from AT&T as the Integrated Access and Cross Connect System ('IACS'), is provided with an ATM-to-DCME interface that converts ATM formatted packets to a regular channelized bitstream usable as an input by the IACS. The interface and the IACS are positioned on both ends of a PSTN to allow for connectivity between the PSTN and a plurality of ATM networks, as well as the required optimization of bandwidth usage. In another illustrative example of the invention, the functionality of the interface is built in to the IACS to convert ATM formatted packets directly into efficient wideband formatted packets for transmission over the PSTN.

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) transport of voice-band signals

A method and apparatus is disclosed for determining an objective measure of performance of an extended finite state machine. Many modern complex systems, for example, computer communications protocols and computer or machine user interfaces, can be represented as extended finite state machines. A formal description of the extended finite state machine is employed to obtain a canonical form description. The canomical form description, combined with a service description, is used to generate a list of canocial state transitions transited by the extended finite state machine to perform the service. From this list, an objective measurement of performance, e.g., the time required to perform a particular service, is obtained. This objective measurement may then be used as desired, for example, to select an optimum extended finite state machine from a plurality of extended finite state machines.
