Optical wireless communication system and method

An optical wireless communication (OWC) system comprising a first device comprising a transceiver apparatus and a plurality of further devices each comprising a respective further transceiver apparatus. The first device communicates via an optical channel with the plurality of further devices. The transceiver apparatus may comprise a receiver for receiving light representing optical wireless communication signals transmitted by the further devices, the receiver comprising a photodetector; receiver-side processing circuitry for processing optical wireless communication signals received by the receiver to extract data represented by the received optical wireless communication signals; a transmitter for transmitting further light representing optical wireless communication signals; transmitter-side processing circuitry for producing optical wireless communication signals for transmission by the transmitter; and an optical component for at least one of reflecting or guiding at least some light received from at least one of the further devices towards at least one of the further devices.

Signal retransmission system and method

An optical wireless communication (OWC) unit for transmitting and/or receiving data installable in a further device comprises at least one transmitter device for transmitting modulated light comprising an OWC signal of said data and/or at least one receiver device for receiving modulated light comprising an OWC signal representative of said data, wherein the at least one receiver device comprises at least one detector. The OWC unit further comprises analogue electronic circuitry for processing electronic signals and at least one power connection and/or at least one data connection for connection to a power source and/or processing resource of the further device. The OWC unit is operable to provide OWC communication under control of said further device and/or so as to transmit data from/provide data to said further device. The OWC unit is for use in an OWC system having an analogue bandwidth greater than or equal to 80 MHz.

An optical wireless communication system and method An optical wireless communication (OWC) system comprises: a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) device configured to provide a plurality of signals each representing a respective data stream; conditioning circuitry configured to receive the plurality of signals from the MIMO device and process the plurality of signals to produce at least one conditioned signal representative of the data stream(s) and suitable for transmission using an OWC transmission device; an OWC transmission device comprising at least one transmitter for transmitting light and configured to be responsive to the at least one conditioned signal to transmit light representative of the data stream(s) using the at least one transmitter.

An optical wireless communication system comprises: a first device comprising a transceiver apparatus; and a plurality of further devices each comprising respective further transceiver apparatus, wherein the first device is configured to communicate via at least one optical channel with the plurality of further devices, and the transceiver apparatus of the first device comprising: a receiver for receiving light (optionally of a first wavelength or range of wavelengths) representing optical wireless communication signals transmitted by the further devices, the receiver comprising at least one photodetector; receiver-side processing circuitry for processing optical wireless communication signals received by the receiver to extract data represented by the received optical wireless communication signals; a transmitter for transmitting further light (optionally of a second wavelength or range of wavelengths)s representing optical wireless communication signals; transmitter-side processing circuitry for producing optical wireless communication signals for transmission by the transmitter; a multiplexer arrangement that is arranged to receive optical wireless communication signals from a plurality of signal paths and to pass the signals to the transmitter for transmission; and a controller for controlling operation of the transceiver apparatus of the first device, wherein a first of the signal paths to the multiplexer arrangement is from the transmitter-side processing circuitry; a second of the signal paths to the multiplexer arrangement is from the receiver-side; and the controller controls operation of the transceiver apparatus so as to pass via the multiplexer arrangement to the transmitter for re-transmission at least part of an optical wireless communication signal received from one of the further devices by the receiver thereby to indicate to the other further devices of the plurality of further devices that an optical channel of the receiver is busy.

An optical wireless communication device for transmitting data comprises a transmitter comprising a light source, a controller configured to control operation of the light source to produce modulated light comprising an optical wireless communication signal representative of said data, at least one proximity determining component configured to determine a proximity of an object, and a processing resource configured to determine whether the determined proximity is within a threshold distance, wherein the controller is configured to control operation of the transmitter and/or of at least one other component of the optical wireless communication device in dependence on whether the determined proximity is within the threshold distance.

An optical wireless communication (OWC) transmitter comprising a baseband chip comprises: a media access control (MAC) layer configured to receive data from a network; a first physical (PHY) layer associated with a first light source; and a second physical (PHY) layer associated with a second light source; wherein the first PHY layer is configured to receive first data from the MAC layer and provide a first signal to the first light source, so as to drive the first light source to emit first modulated light that comprises or is representative of the first data; and the second PHY layer is configured to receive second data from the MAC layer and provide a second signal to the second light source, so as to drive the second light source to emit second modulated light that comprises or is representative of the second data.

An optical wireless communication system comprising a transmitter apparatus that comprises: an illumination light source configured to output visible light for illumination purposes, and a controller configured to control operation of the illumination light source to produce modulation of the visible light to provide an optical wireless communication signal representing data; a further light source configured to output further light, wherein the controller is configured to control operation of the further light source to produce modulation of the further light to provide a further optical wireless communication signal representing substantially the same data, wherein the visible light and the further light have different wavelengths.

A collision avoidance method for a wireless network comprising a plurality of devices, the method comprises receiving, by a first device of the plurality of devices, a message from a second device of the plurality of devices, transmitting, by the first device, a busy signal in response to the receiving of at least part of the message from the second device, the transmitting of the busy signal being at least partly simultaneous with the receiving of the message, receiving, by at least one further device of the plurality of devices, the busy signal, and delaying, by the at least one further device and in response to the busy signal, transmission of at least one further message by the at least one further device.

Collision avoidance method and system for wireless communication systems

Analyzer for signal anomalies

A method and a corresponding device determines the speed of a moving entity carrying at least two antennas for receiving a transmission signal the antennas being displaced at a predetermined distance. In order to provide a more simple and accurate method which can be used with different transmission signals the method includes the steps of: receiving a transmission signal by the antennas, determining signal characteristics from the transmission signal as received by the determining a time offset between the reception of the transmission signal at the antennas by comparing the signal characteristics determined for the antennas, and determining the speed of the moving entity from the determined time offset, the distance of the antennas and the direction of movement of the moving entity relative to the arrangement of the antennas.
