An armor plate for use in the ballistic protection of a structure against projectiles incoming from an expected threat direction, the plate having an outer face facing the threat direction and comprising a layer of first pellets made of ballistic material of a high density Sand having a characteristic diameter D, and second pellets which have a low density section with a central axis transverse to the outer face, along which the low density section at least partially extends, the low density section of the second pellets having a density Swhich is in the range 0&#x2266;S&#x3c;&#x3c;S, the second pellets having an outer characteristic diameter Dsubstantially equal to the diameter Dand the low density section having an inner characteristic diameter D, D&#x3c;D, each second pellet being surrounded only by the first pellets.

Armor plate

An armor module for protecting a surface against an explosively formed projectile (EFP) threat is provided. The armor module is configured for mounting on the surface and comprises at least one armor assembly having a hard layer disposed facing the threat and being configured to fragment the EFP, thus forming residuals of the original EFP threat; a unidirectional fiber layer disposed behind the hard layer; and a catcher layer behind the unidirectional fiber layer, the catcher layer being made of a material exhibiting a level of ballistic protection such that a layer of the material being of the same thickness as the unidirectional fiber layer absorbs at least 20% more energy than is the unidirectional fiber layer for the same threat.

Armor module

According to the present invention there is provided an armor array for protecting a body to be protected from an incoming projectile having an anticipated impact direction. The armor array is constituted by at least a first and a second armor cassette, each comprising a top base plate and a bottom base plate sandwiching therebetween an expandable layer. The first and second armor cassettes are spaced apart by an intermediate depressible panel having a top and a bottom face, such that the bottom base plate of the first armor cassette faces the top face of the intermediate depressible panel and the top base plate of the second cassette faces the bottom face of the intermediate depressible panel. The armor array is constructed such that upon expansion of the expandable layer, caused by the impact of the incoming projectile, at least one of the bottom base plate of the first armor cassette and the top base plate of the second armor cassette is urged towards the intermediate depressible panel and depresses it.

Armor module and an armor array used therein

A composite armor plate with a layer of pellets in a binder matrix, the pellets having domed front and planar back end and a reduced weight. A method of producing the plate comprises providing front and back layers, applying binder material to the pellets and the layers, and heating the binder material to form the matrix and bind the front and back layers thereto. Each pellet may be coated with a primer adapted to facilitate the binding.

Ballistic armor

A dual hardness armor, comprising a first steel layer of hardness Hand thickness D, a second steel layer of hardness Hlower than H, and a thickness Dnot greater than D. The armor further comprises an intermediate substance therebetween bonding the first steel layer to the second steel layer.

Armor

An energy absorbing device is provided for reducing acceleration resulting from a force of a high energy impact acting on one side of the device in an impact direction. The device includes two plates transverse to the impact direction, an energy absorbing mechanism between the plates, and a stabilizing mechanism having at least one pair of a projecting element and a receiving element, the projecting element comprised on one plate and a corresponding receiving element comprised on the other plate. Each pair is adapted for enabling the projecting element thereof to be at least partially received by the corresponding the receiving element in a manner to restrict relative displacement between the two plates at least in one direction different from the impact direction and to allow substantially free relative displacement between the plates in the impact direction.

Energy absorbing device for a vehicle seat

An armor panel adapted to protect a body from an incoming projectile, the armor panel comprising an armor member constituted by at least one layer. The layer is encapsulated within and pressed upon by a wrapping as a result of an arresting process. The panel has a front, rear and side walls. The wrapping is preformed, prior to the process, with at least one outlet hole at least one of the rear and side walls. Through the outlet hole, air trapped within the armor panel prior to the arresting process, and/or excess gasses produced during the process, are allowed to escape.

An energy absorbing device for reducing acceleration transmitted to a seated occupant in a vehicle as a result of a high energy impact. The device comprises a first energy absorbing mechanism having a first dimension in the impact direction and capable of undergoing predetermined elastic deformation in that direction; and a second energy absorbing mechanism having a second dimension in the impact direction, which is smaller than the first dimension by a distance corresponding to that elastic deformation. The second mechanism is loaded with the impact force after the first mechanism has undergone elastic deformation; the second mechanism comprises a material capable of progressive deformation. The device may comprise a restriction mechanism connecting the two plates, adapted to restrict displacement of the first plate relative to the second plate in any direction different from the impact direction.

An armor designed for ballistic protection against armor piercing projectiles, comprises a main armor plate including a layer which is at least partially made of a ballistic material, e.g. in the form of a plurality of bodies, and an auxiliary armor plate at least partially made of a ballistic material. The auxiliary plate is located in front of the main armor plate and is spaced therefrom by an area, which is at least partially free of any additional layers. The auxiliary plate has through holes spaced from each other, which are free of any ballistic material.

A composite armor structure for ballistically protecting a gap from an impacting projectile threat and for use with at least one ballistic armor module. The gap extends along a margin of the module. The structure comprises a body having a protection portion with at least a single layer of ceramic bodies. The structure further comprises a carrier portion supporting the protection portion and being made of a material different from the ceramic bodies. The protection portion is designed to span the gap. The carrier portion is designed to extend beyond the gap to overlap with the margin when viewed from a perspective of the impacting projectile threat.

Composite armor structure

The invention provides an armor system for ballistic protection of a flexible conduit, the system comprising a plurality of protective tubular elements in axial alternating array with double-socket joint elements, the outer peripheral ends of the tubular elements being provided with a convex curvature complementary to a concave curvature provided along the inner peripheral ends of the double-socket joint elements, a protective tubular element being inserted in each end of the double-socket joint elements, the curved peripheral end allowing any tubular element connected to a double-socket element to till freely relative thereto.
