A slider for supporting at least one transducer includes a slider body having a bearing surface and an opposing mounting surface. The slider also includes at least one adhesive control feature formed on the mounting surface to increase a surface area on which an adhesive is deposited.

Features for improved slider attachment

A disc head slider having a slider body that includes a bearing surface, a cavity dam and a sub-ambient pressure cavity is provided. The sub-ambient pressure cavity has a cavity floor, a plurality of sides and a depth that progressively varies between a point on one of the sides and a corresponding point on an opposing side. The depth is measured from the bearing surface to the cavity floor. The cavity floor comprises a plurality of substantially flat bottom surfaces that are separated by at least one elevational change. Other embodiments pertain to other specialized slider cavity configurations.

A gimbal assembly includes a gimbal and a slider. The slider has at least one adhesive receiving feature which is formed on a mounting surface of the slider. The gimbal has a lock feature including at least one body that protrudes from a slider-engaging surface and terminates at a first end. Each body of the lock feature engages each adhesive receiving feature of the slider.

A method and apparatus are provided characterizing the shape of a surface such as a bearing surface on a slider and for processing the shape. The shape is characterized by fitting a curve having a desired shape to measurement data and then determining residual deviations from the desired shape within localized regions. The surface is processed by selecting a material stress pattern to be applied to a working surface of the slider based on measured and desired contour shape parameters in a plurality of localized areas on the bearing surface. The measured contour shape parameter within a first of the plurality of localized areas is weighted more heavily than those within the other localized areas.

A head for a disc drive and a method of making the head. The head includes a substrate with a trailing side and a first air bearing surface that generates lift. A magnetic transducer is deposited along the trailing side and has a pole tip that is spaced apart from a disc by a pole-to-disc spacing. The head also includes a deposit along the trailing side. The deposit includes a second air bearing surface that changes position relative to the first air bearing surface as temperature increases.

A method of contouring a surface of a slider for supporting a transducer relative to a data storage medium includes applying a lithographic resist layer to the slider surface. The resist layer is then exposed through a single mask having 3a mask pattern defined by variation in an optical density through the mask. The resist layer is exposed in an exposure pattern corresponding to the mask pattern. Portions of the resist layer are removed as a function of the exposure pattern to produce a vertically contoured resist layer. The slider surface is etched through the vertically contoured resist layer during a single etching step to form a vertically contoured surface feature within the slider surface.

A magnetic head has an air bearing surface, a substrate, a data transducer and a composite overcoat layer. The data transducer is positioned upon the substrate adjacent the air bearing surface. The data transducer includes a plurality of metallic layers. The composite overcoat layer is positioned upon the data transducer on a side of the data transducer opposite the substrate. An effective coefficient of thermal expansion of the composite overcoat layer is substantially equal to a coefficient of thermal expansion of a material forming the substrate.

A data storage device includes a head suspension assembly having an attached airfoil. The airfoil is coupled to an active (i.e., movable) element that responds to signals from height control circuitry. A method of controlling a height of an air bearing surface includes positioning a suspension assembly having an airfoil and an air bearing disk head over a surface of a rotating data storage disk. A position (e.g., an angle) of the airfoil can then be dynamically altered to change a distance of the disk head perpendicular to the surface of the disk.

Control of data sensor fly height

An apparatus adapted to clean an exposed surface of a microstructure device such as a disc or head for a disc drive. The apparatus includes a fixture with a mounting surface adapted to receive the microstructure device. A cleaning fluid covers the exposed surface. A slider bearing coupled to a resilient mount flies over the exposed surface. A cleaning line on the exposed surface adjacent the slider bearing is subject to flow of the cleaning fluid. The flow can be generated by relative motion between the device and the slider bearing or generated by a nozzle.

Method and apparatus for cleaning disc drive components

A disc head slider supports a transducer relative to a data storage disc. The slider includes a slider body having a disc-facing surface with a leading slider edge, a trailing slider edge, and first and second slider corners at opposing ends of the trailing slider edge. First and second rails are disposed on the disc facing surface about a central recess and form first and second bearing surfaces, respectively. The central recess has a depth measured from the first and second bearing surfaces. First and second recessed surfaces are positioned between a trailing edge of the first and second rails and the first and second slider corners, respectively, and are generally coplanar with the central recess. Third and fourth recessed corner surfaces are positioned at the first and second slider corners, respectively, and are recessed from the first and second recessed surfaces.
