A bone grafter attachment for removing and collecting bone fragments from a donor bone site using a surgical rotational handpiece includes a rotatable drill having a shank engageable with the handpiece and a cutting member, and a container for receiving bone fragments. The container has an opening through which the cutting member passes. The container is held against the donor bone during operation, and the container is held against rotation during rotation of the drill. The drill is axially movable relative to the container to enable the drill to penetrate into the bone. When the drill is rotated by the handpiece and the cutting member thereof engages bone, bone fragments are created and pass over the cutting member and through the opening into the container. Preferably, the cutting member of the drill has flutes through which the bone fragments pass into the container. The collected bone fragments can be removed from the container and used in a bone grafting procedure.

A rescue method and apparatus for rescuing or evacuating occupants from high rise buildings or other high structures includes a frame adjacent an escape portion of the high structure; a dynamic resistance device such as an air fan mounted to the frame; and a removable and replaceable cable cartridge, having a pre-wound cable, which is removably and non-rotatably coupled to a rotatable portion of the dynamic resistance device. The cable is connectable to a person to be evacuated. When the person to be evacuated goes out from the escape portion of the high structure, his descending motion causes the cable to unwind with the same linear speed as the descending speed of the person, thus causing the rotatable portion of the dynamic resistance device to rotate and to create resistance to the descending speed of the person, until the descending speed of the person reaches a substantially equilibrium value. After a first person is evacuated, a new cable cartridge is mounted to the dynamic resistance device and the cable thereof is connected to a next person to be evacuated.

The cable is connectable to a person to be rescued. When the person to be rescued goes out from the escape portion of the building, his falling motion causes the cable to move with the same speed as the falling speed, thus causing the rotatable portion of the dynamic resistance device to rotate and to create resistance to the falling speed, until the falling speed of the person reaches a substantially constant value. An intraosseous delivery apparatus having a drilling member and a sleeve member. The drilling member includes a drill housing, a connecting portion for establishing a connection to a conventional dental drilling apparatus, and a drill extending from the drill housing. The sleeve member includes a sleeve housing, and a hollow sleeve extending from the sleeve housing. The sleeve housing is adapted to be removably engaged with the drill housing such that the drill is inserted into the hollow sleeve. The drill has a length such that when the drill is inserted into the hollow sleeve, a portion of the drill extends beyond the hollow sleeve. As a result, when the drill is used to drill a hole in bone, the drill is inserted deeper into the hole than the hollow sleeve. The hollow sleeve is adapted to be left inserted in the bone when the drill is removed therefrom. The &ldquo;in place&rdquo; hollow sleeve is also adapted to receive a syringe needle through which anesthesia may be directly introduced into the bone via an exposed bottom portion of the drilled hole as well as via exposed side-wall portions of the drilled hole. The drill is preferably smooth, and may also be hollow so that debris generated during drilling enters the interior of the drill. In this case, when the hollow drill is removed from the hollow sleeve, the debris within the hollow drill may also be removed. Still further, the drill may be made of a titanium alloy whose flexibility, wearability and cutting ability is greater than that of conventional hardened stainless steel.

An intraosseous delivery apparatus having a drill coupling member and a drilling needle member. The drill coupling member includes a shaft, an open housing provided at one end of the shaft, a connecting portion provided at an opposite end of the shaft for establishing a connection to a conventional dental drill, and an anticlog needle extending from the shaft through the open housing. The drilling needle member includes a drilling needle housing and a hollow drilling needle shaft extending therefrom. The drilling needle member is adapted to be removably engaged with the drill coupling member such that the drilling needle housing of the drilling needle member is inserted into the open housing of the drill coupling member and such that the anticlog needle of the drill coupling member is inserted into the hollow drilling needle shaft of the drilling needle member. The drilling needle housing of the drilling needle member and the open housing of the drill coupling member are shaped so that a bone penetration force may be applied therebetween for drilling a hole in a bone to insert the drilling needle member therein when the drilling needle member and the drill coupling member are engaged. The hollow drilling needle shaft is adapted to receive a needle of a syringe when the drilling needle member and the drill coupling member are disengaged and the drilling needle member is left inserted in the hole drilled in the bone, so that a reusable communication path through the hollow drilling needle shaft directly into the hole drilled in the bone is established through which fluid may be repeatedly injected.

A dental handpiece having a slow speed, high torque rotary output, comprises a housing member; an input shaft rotatably mounted in the housing member; a coupling member at an end portion of the input shaft for being coupled to a rotary dental drive unit; a plurality of planetary gear stages sequentially arranged within the housing member, a first of the planetary gear stages being coupled so as to be rotationally driven by the input shaft; subsequent planetary gear stages being sequentially coupled to each other such that an output of one planetary gear stage drives an input of a next subsequent planetary gear stage; and an output shaft coupled to a final output planetary gear stage of the plurality of sequentially arranged planetary gear stages. The output shaft provides a slow speed, high torque rotary output responsive to the input shaft being driven by a higher speed rotary dental drive unit.

A high speed dental drill includes a drill head having a housing including a bottom and a cavity, and a turbine assembly mounted in the cavity for supporting a dental tool extending outwardly from the bottom of the housing, the turbine assembly including a rotor shaft and an annular turbine drive mounted thereon. The outer surface of the annular turbine drive has blades with an outer shape of a substantially inverted D-shaped chordal segment cut out therefrom so that rotation of the rotor shaft occurs at high speed when air impinges against the part-circular cut-away surfaces of the blades. Bearing assemblies rotatably support the shaft of the turbine assembly, and an exhaust is provided for exhausting air from the turbine assembly out of the bottom of the housing and to create and maintain positive air pressure in the housing, even during turn off of the drill, so as to prevent liquid from being drawn up into the housing, the exhaust including an exhaust hole in the bottom of the housing and an exhaust channel formed in the housing for supplying air to the exhaust hole from the turbine assembly. An elongated handle is connected with the housing, and has an air conduit in communication with the cavity of the housing for supplying pressure air against the turbine assembly, and a water conduit for supplying water under pressure through a water spray hole in the housing so that a water spray impinges upon the drilling tool during use.

A rotary dental drive tool has a rotatable driving member which is connected to a working tool via a self-tightening chuck, the rotatable driving member rotating in a clockwise direction during use. The chuck includes a chuck member having a tool-engaging internal surface portion for receiving a working tool therein, the chuck member having a tapered outer surface portion which is engageable with a tapered inner surface portion of the rotatable driving member so as to press the tool-engaging internal surface portion of the chuck member against the working tool to fixedly engage the working tool with said rotatable driving member via the chuck member. The chuck member has a left-hand threaded screw member on an outer surface portion thereof, which is engageable with a left-hand threaded screw portion on an inner surface portion of the rotatable driving member. The chuck member is rotatable in a left-hand threaded manner into the screw threaded portion of the rotatable driving member so as to cause the tapered surfaces to mutually engage and press the tool-engaging surface portion of the chuck member against the working tool responsive to rotation of the rotatable driving member, whereby the chuck member automatically self-tightens against the working tool during operation of the dental drive tool, and the working tool rotates with the rotatable driving member.

A dental scaler comprises an elongated housing having a forward end at which a dental scaling tool is removably connectable, and a rearward end for connection to a source of pressure working fluid. A substantially rigid elongated tubular member is resiliently supported in the housing. A vibration imparting device is coupled to an intermediate portion of the elongated tubular member, and is driven by the pressure working fluid to vibrate the elongated tubular member. A dental scaling tool is connected at the forward end portion of the elongated tubular member, and is vibrated by the vibrations produced by the vibration device. A frequency stabilizing weight is fixedly and immovably secured to a rearward end portion of the elongated tubular member for stabilizing the frequency of the vibration imparted to the forward end portion of the elongated tubular member, the weight having an outer dimension smaller than the inner dimension of the housing in the vicinity of the weight so as not to contact the housing during vibration of the elongated tubular member. The weight is preferably substantially disk-shaped, and is preferably arranged close to the rear end of the elongated tubular member. An anti-rotation device may be coupled to a forward end portion of the elongated tubular member for preventing rotation thereof relative to the housing.
