A super-resolution algorithm that explicitly and exactly models the detector pixel shape, size, location, and gaps for periodic and aperiodic tilings. The algorithm projects the low-resolution input image into high-resolution space to model the actual shapes and/or gaps of the detector pixels. By using an aperiodic pixel layout such as a Penrose tiling significant improvements in super-resolution results can be obtained. An error back-projection super-resolution algorithm makes use of the exact detector model in its back projection operator for better accuracy. Theoretically, the aperiodic detector can be based on CCD (charge-coupled device) technology, and/or more practically, CMOS (complimentary metal oxide semiconductor) technology, for example.

Super-resolution in periodic and aperiodic pixel imaging

Photodiode-based bi-directional reflectance distribution function (BRDF) measurement is described. Multiple photodiodes are distributed approximately symmetrically at a fixed distance from a surface to be measured. One or more of the photodiodes are directed to emit light, while readings are gathered from the other photodiodes that are not emitting light. The readings are processed based on previously measured calibration data to generate BRDF values.

System and method for capturing and viewing stereoscopic panoramic images

A system for generating a stereoscopic panoramic image pair having left and right panoramic mosaic images for use in facilitating stereoscopic viewing of a panoramic scene, the system comprising a panoramic image generator and a strip separation value generation module. The panoramic image generator is configured to mosaic together respective left and right image strips from respective ones of a plurality of images to form the respective left and right panoramic images. The panoramic image generator is configured to use strip separation values for the respective images to determine the separation of the respective left and right image strips in generating the respective left and right panoramic images. The strip separation value generation module is configured to generate, for respective ones of said images, the strip separation values so as to provide at least one selected disparity for objects in the panoramic scene.

System and method for facilitating the adjustment of disparity in a stereoscopic panoramic image pair

Various camera arrangements are disclosed comprising a camera and an optical element. The camera is configured to record an image defined by light rays directed thereto. The optical element is configured to deflect rays from a scene to the camera for recording thereby. The optical element is further configured to deflect the rays such that, if the rays were undeflected, the rays would instead be tangent to a viewing device of predetermined shape, such as a circle. Optical elements may be in the form of curved mirrors or lenses. The camera arrangements are configured to record images in the form of left or right panoramic images of a stereo panoramic image pair, and several stereo panoramic camera arrangements are described, including one or more camera arrangements, for contemporaneously recording both left or right panoramic images of a stereo panoramic image pair.
