Liquid crystal poly(phenylene sulfonic acids)

Sulfonated polyimide polymers incorporating bulky monomers are disclosed. The polymers have a liquid crystalline structure and exhibit high conductivity, high water uptake and water stability over a range of relative humidities and temperatures. The polymers are particularly adapted for use as a polymer electrolyte membrane in fuel cells.

An acid solution for casting solid polymer electrolyte membranes comprising proton conducting polymers stable at temperatures in excess of 100.degree. C. directly from acid solution. The invention further relates to the enhanced performance of these membranes with respect to conductivity. Particularly, the invention relates to the use of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) as an acid solvent doped with H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 from which polybenzimiadazole (PBI) solid polymer electrolyte membranes may be cast.

The subject invention relates to solid polymer electrolyte membranes comprising proton conducting polymers stable at temperatures in excess of 100.degree. C., the polymer being basic polymer complexed with a strong acid or an acid polymer. The invention further relates to the use of such membranes in electrolytic cells and acid fuel cells. Particularly, the invention relates to the use of polybenzimidazole as a suitable polymer electrolyte membrane.

Polymeric compositions exhibiting superior physical properties, useful in the fabrication of composites and other applications, are prepared by the polymerization of thermotropic, monomeric materials having orderable molecular structures. The monomers comprise molecules containing mesogen groups with side chains on either end thereof terminated with reactive groups, the reactive groups being separated from the mesogens by spacer atoms. The monomers are polymerized in their crystalline or liquid crystalline state, or under conditions which assure that at least part of the monomeric molecules are in an ordered state. The reactive groups which are consequently in proximity with each other, are thereby capable of interaction without molecular diffusion, allowing substantially complete polymerizations to be achieved despite the increasing conversion and glass transition temperature of the polymers being formed.

Polimerization of liquid crystalline monomers

The present application relates to novel silicon based preceramic polymers useful in the production of silicon carbide reinforcement fibers, and to the novel synthesis procedures by which such polymers and reinforcement fibers may be produced. These novel polymers are produced by preparing phenyl substituted polyalkylcyclohexasilane compounds, which are then converted to the corresponding halogen substituted compound by reaction with the appropriate ammonium halide and sulfuric acid in a suitable solvent such as benzene, and then polymerizing the substituted cyclohexasilane by reaction with an alkali metal, again in a suitable solvent such as toluene or benzene, to produce polymers of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is lower alkyl, preferably methyl or ethyl, R.sub.2 is lower alkyl or hydrogen, m is 0 to 5, n is at least 3. The polymers of the present invention have an average molecular weight of from about 1000 to 100 million or more.

Solutions of cellulose in hydrazine are formed by dissolving cellulose therein. The cellulose solutions formed may be utilized for the preparation of fibers, films, foams or other cellulose fabricated articles. Alternatively, the dissolution of cellulose in hydrazine may be employed as a means for the direct extraction of cellulose from lignocellulosic materials without the necessity of pulping operations.
