The method comprises capturing a plurality of images of a single biometric object during a single activation of a biometric sensor and ranking the images based on a ranking metric value of each of the images to determine a highest ranked image and at least one non-highest ranked image. The method comprises comparing, in a first matching attempt for the biometric object, the highest ranked image to templates of a plurality of pre-stored biometric object templates, wherein a matching metric is determined for each compared template, and generating a match indicating signal when it is determined that at least one of the matching metrics exceeds a matching threshold value. When it is determined that none of the matching metrics exceed the matching threshold value, one of the non-highest ranked images is compared, in a further matching attempt, to templates of the plurality of templates based on the matching metrics.

Template matching of a biometric object

The present disclosure relates a method for fingerprint image enhancement comprising applying a first low pass filter and a first weight to raw fingerprint image data to produce a first filtered fingerprint image data set. Applying a second low pass filter and a second weight to the raw fingerprint image data to produce a second filtered fingerprint image data set. Filter coefficients of the second filter are different from filter coefficients of the first filter. The first filtered fingerprint image data set and the second filtered fingerprint image data set are combined to produce a final enhanced fingerprint image. The disclosure also relates to a fingerprint sensing system and to an electronic device comprising a fingerprint sensing system.

Method and system for fingerprint image enhancement

A fingerprint image is acquired, and it is determined if the finger is still touching the sensing surface. When the finger no longer touches the sensing surface, the user is authenticated based on one or several fingerprint image(s) acquired so far. When the finger still touches the sensing surface, a quality measure is determined for the fingerprint image. When a quality of the fingerprint image fulfills a predefined quality criterion, the user is authenticated based on one or several fingerprint images acquired so far. When the quality of the fingerprint image fails to fulfill the predefined quality criterion, a subsequent fingerprint image is acquired. When the finger still touches the sensing surface, and the quality measure indicates that the quality of the subsequent fingerprint image fulfills the predefined quality criterion, the user is authenticated based on one or several fingerprint images acquired so far including the subsequent fingerprint image.

Fingerprint authentication system and method providing for reduced latency

The invention relates to a method performed by a fingerprint sensing system of determining if a finger contacts a fingerprint sensor of the system, and a fingerprint sensing system performing method. In a first aspect of the invention, a method performed by a fingerprint sensing system is provided for determining if a finger contacts a fingerprint sensor of the fingerprint sensing system. The method comprises capturing an image of an object contacting the fingerprint sensor, determining an intensity for a plurality of pixels of the captured image, estimating local curvatures of pixel intensity variation in the captured image, and determining from the estimated local curvatures if local pixel intensity variation is dominated by a single direction, in which case the object on the sensor is considered to constitute a finger.
