A disposable, wearable, self-contained insulin dispensing device includes a housing and an insulin source in the housing that is connected to a catheter for injecting insulin into a user. The catheter projects generally perpendicularly to a generally planar surface of the housing configured for abutting a skin surface of the user; which planar surface includes an adhesive layer for adhering the housing surface to the skin surface. A removable release sheet covers the adhesive layer for protecting the adhesive layer prior to use of the device. The release sheet is provided with a catheter protection element to enclose and protect an end portion of the catheter, such that removal of the release sheet for exposing the adhesive layer also exposes the end portion. A pump in the housing includes an actuator employing a shape memory alloy wire.

An infusion pump unit includes a housing sized to allow the pump unit to be carried as a portable unit. The housing contains a controllable pumping system for pumping fluid. The pump actuator is lighter, smaller, quieter and less power consuming.

A flexible piston rod includes a piston and a row of elements, each having top, bottom, and lateral surfaces, the top surface of one element being connected to the bottom surface of an adjacent element by a hinge that allows the two adjacent elements to pivot from a first position, where a portion of the top surface of one element abuts a corresponding portion of the bottom surface of the adjacent element and corresponding to a rectilinear, relatively stiff configuration of the piston rod, to a second position wherein the top surface of one element is spaced from the bottom surface of the adjacent element and corresponding to a curved configuration of the piston rod. The lateral surface of each element has first and second mutually-opposed cylindrical surface portions incorporating a thread for meshing with a corresponding thread of an actuator for displacing the piston rod longitudinally.

A shape memory alloy actuator comprising a body () connected through an arm () with an activating member (), the body () being arranged for rotation around a pivot () and connected to a first wire () and a second wire () of a shape memory alloy such as nitinol and to a biasing means such as a tension spring () such that heating and therefore shortening of the wire () rotates the body () counter-clockwise such that the tension spring () is in its cocked position while heating (shortening) of the wire () and cooling (lengthening) of the wire () to the position shown inrotates the body () clockwise past a balance point for the tension spring () whereafter the body () rotates further clockwise under the influence of the tension spring (), thereby exerting a relatively powerful actuation of the activating member (), the whole cyclus being repeated by heating wire () causing it to shorten and rotate the body () counter-clockwise until the spring () is cocked again.
