The present invention aims at expanding an operation range for allowing a compression ignition combustion operation. The present invention provides an internal combustion engine of a compression ignition type that is capable of operating with a compression ignition combustion scheme in a given operation range. The ECU of the internal combustion engine detects an operating condition of the internal combustion engine and determines, according to the detected operating condition, which mode is to be used operate the internal combustion engine, a 4-cycle compression ignition mode or a 2-cycle compression ignition mode. The ECU controls the internal compression engine to perform the compression ignition mode determined. According to the present invention, the compression ignition combustion operation is switched from 4-cycle to 2-cycle when the operating condition of the internal combustion engine is in such state that the 4-cycle compression ignition mode cannot be performed, fro example, when the exhaust temperature is low.

Internal combustion engine of compression ignition type

A control system for a compression ignition internal combustion engine is provided which is capable of expanding a region for executing compression ignition, on the low-load side, while positively obtaining a required power output from the engine. The amount of residual combustion gas is determined depending on operating conditions of the engine, and based on the determined amount of residual combustion gas, part of combustion gas is retained in each combustion chamber after combustion. It is judged whether or not supercharging of fresh air should be executed for self-ignition, based on the operating conditions of the engine, and when it is judged that the supercharging should be executed, supercharging of fresh air flowing to the combustion chamber is executed.

Control system and method and engine control unit for compression ignition internal combustion engine

There is provided a method of controlling a compression ignition internal combustion engine which allows switching of combustion of an air-fuel mixture between compression ignition combustion for burning said air-fuel mixture by compression ignition and spark ignition combustion for burning said air-fuel mixture by spark ignition, in dependence on an operating condition of said engine. Ignition timing of said spark ignition is progressively retarded when the switching of said combustion is carried out from said spark ignition combustion to said compression ignition combustion, to thereby control the switching of said combustion to said compression ignition combustion.

Method of controlling compression ignition internal combustion engine

Selectively operable first and second exhaust valves are provided for every combustion chamber in an engine. Branch pipes of a first intake manifold are connected to first exhaust ports opened and closed by the first exhaust valves, and branch pipes of a second exhaust manifold are connected to second exhaust ports opened and closed by the second exhaust valves. An adsorbing trap is provided in an aggregated pipe of the first exhaust manifold and a catalytic converter is provided in a common exhaust pipe connected to the aggregated pipes of the first and second exhaust manifolds. Only the first exhaust valves are operated to open and close at a low temperature of the adsorbing trap to permit the exhaust gas to flow into the first exhaust manifold. Thus, hydrocarbons (HCs) in the exhaust gas are adsorbed into the adsorbing trap at the low temperature and the heat of the exhaust gas is effectively utilized to promote the activation of the catalytic converter. As the temperature increases sufficiently to activate the catalytic converter, the HCs adsorbed by the adsorbing trap are desorbed, which restores the HCs adsorbing capability of the adsorbing trap, and the exhaust gases are treated directly by the catalytic converted by operating the second exhaust valves while resting the first exhaust valves.

Exhaust emission control system in engine

An exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine is provided with a main catalyst activated with heat of exhaust gas, a self-exothermic type auxiliary catalyst activated with electric current energy and a silencer, which are connected in series and in sequence from an upstream side to a downstream side in an exhaust system leading from an engine body. Thus, noxious components included in the exhaust gas can be converted and the gas is purified by using the main and auxiliary catalysts in combination but with the auxiliary catalyst being subject to less heat from the exhaust gas than the main catalyst.

Exhaust emission control device for internal combustion engine

An automatic tensioner apparatus comprising an idler pulley engaging a transmission belt of a wrapping connector type transmission mechanism, an arm for swingably supporting the idler pulley with respect to a predetermined supporting surface, and a resilient member for exhibiting a resilient force for swinging the arm and the idler pulley in a direction to engage the transmission belt in order to apply a predetermined tension to the transmission belt. A casing for accommodating the resilient member is secured to the supporting surface and an arm pivot-supporting portion for swingably supporting a base portion of the arm is integrally provided on the casing in such a manner that the arm pivot-supporting portion is offset relative to the resilient member in a direction along the supporting surface and relative to the resilient member in a direction away from the supporting surface. The automatic tensioner apparatus need not be separated especially forwardly from the supporting surface to locate the so-called belt line at a front, distanced position from the supporting surface for ensuring a relatively wide space to place another functional part around the automatic tensioner apparatus between the base portion of the arm and the supporting surface. The space is obtained without difficulty.
