An electronic cigarette includes a laser and a replaceable atomiser. A reservoir is provided for storing a vaporisable liquid. The replaceable atomiser includes a light guide, an absorber and a vaporisation chamber. A liquid inlet in the atomiser provides a flow path for liquid in the reservoir to flow towards the absorber and the vaporisation chamber. The light guide is configured to couple light from the laser towards the absorber which can generate heat by absorbing the emitted light and this can cause vaporisation of the vaporisable liquid. When the light guide becomes dirty or contaminated it can be replaced simply by replacing the atomiser.

Atomiser for use in electronic cigarette with optical vaporisation system

An electronic cigarette includes a laser and a light guide. A reservoir is provided for storing a vaporisable liquid. An absorber is provided to absorb light emitted by the laser and to generate heat. An optical interface is provided at a second end face of the light guide, and a flow path is provided for vaporisable liquid to flow from the reservoir towards the optical interface at the second end face and the absorber. The optical interface selectively reflects or refracts light emitted by the laser such that light emitted by the laser is coupled towards the absorber when liquid is present at the optical interface and light emitted by the laser is coupled away from the absorber when liquid is not present at the optical interface.

Optical vaporisation system for an electronic cigarette

An electronic cigarette includes a main body and a replaceable cartridge that can be disassembled from the main body. The main body includes a laser. The cartridge includes a liquid store and an absorber configured to be heated by radiation emitted by the laser in order to vaporise a vaporisable medium. An enabling device is also provided to enable propagation of radiation from the laser to the absorber when the cartridge is assembled to the main body and to inhibit propagation of radiation from the laser to the absorber when the cartridge is disassembled from the main body.

Electronic cigarette with optical vaporisation system

An optical device includes a sample holder configured to fix an object in the beam path of the optical device, and an illumination module which has a plurality of light sources and configured to illuminate the object from a plurality of illumination directions by operating the light sources, wherein each illumination direction has an assigned luminous field. The optical device also has a filter arranged between the illumination module and the sample holder and configured to expand the assigned luminous field for each illumination direction. As a result, it is possible to reduce artefacts on account of contaminants during the angularly-selective illumination. Techniques of digital artefact reduction are also described. By way of example, the optical device can be a microscope.
