An integrated submerged entry nozzle for thin slab continuous casting has a plate member 12 corresponding to the lower plate of a slide gate and a nozzle member 11 having a flat molten steel passage section in the part to be submerged into molten steel of at least the tip, the both 11. 12 being integrated together by the use of an organic adhesive. The plate member 12 and the nozzle member 11 are separately formed followed by baking or firing, the both 11, 12 are adhered together by the use of an organic adhesive, the adhesive is dried, the outside is covered with a shell, and refractory mortar is filled in the space. Thereafter, a refractory ring 28 is adhered in such a manner as to cover the inside of the adhesive joint part followed by drying.

Integrated submerged entry nozzle and its manufacture

In a slab continuous casting machine comprising a tundish for reserving a molten steel therein, a nozzle holding cassette disposed on an outer bottom portion of the tundish, a mold for use in a casting, and an immersing nozzle mounted in the nozzle holding cassette and for pouring the molten steel in the tundish into the mold, the cavity has a generally rectangular sectional shape defined by a pair of short sides and a pair of long sides. When the immersing nozzle is inserted into the mold and when the immersing nozzle is taken out from the mold, a movement of the immersing nozzle gripped by a handling arm in the mold is limited in a direction parallel to the pair of short sides.

The pouring of molten metal from a tundish to a mold in a continuous casting process is controlled by regulating the variable opening of a tundish nozzle. The level of the molten metal in the mold is measured and compared with a desired preset level and the nozzle opening is varied in accordance with the difference between the measured level of the metal and the preset level in the mold. The nozzle opening is detected and an electrical signal representative thereof is provided to the input of a servo amplifier along with the difference between the measured level of the molten metal and the preset level in the mold to provide a control signal for varying the opening of the nozzle in the tundish. A component of the electrical signal representing a desired minimum opening of the nozzle opening to prevent the full closing thereof is also provided. Different openings of the nozzle in the tundish with respect to the stroke of the piston of a servo cylinder for actuating the nozzle opening are attained by a switch which modifies the electrical signal.
