A upgrading method of low-rank coal containing higher ash and moisture contents into coal decreased in ash content and decreased in moisture content and heightened in heating value includes subjecting the low-rank coal to a low-temperature dry distillation treatment, pulverizing the dry-distilled low-rank coal to form a coal-water slurry and adding a binder to the slurry to effect oil agglomeration of the coal and promote separation of the ash.

Coal particles are agglomerated in pulp water of coal particles by agitating the pulp water in the presence of a binder, which comprises conducting agglomeration in a plurality of zones, the zones being communicated one after another, and transferring the pulp water from one zone to another while agitating the pulp water in each zone and increasing a pulp concentration of the pulp water from one zone to another. Agitating power for the agglomeration is reduced with the successively increasing pulp concentration.

A reducing gas, such as a synthetic fuel gas, produced by gasification of a fossil fuel, containing ammonia or both ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, is purified by passing the reducing gas at first, through a first removing agent of iron or nickel system when the hydrogen sulfide is contained, and then through a second removing agent of iron or nickel system, both at elevated temperatures. For example, when the reducing gas contains both ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, the gas is passed through the first removing agent at a temperature of 450.degree.-700.degree. C. to remove substantially all of the hydrogen sulfide and then is passed through the second removing agent at a temperature of greater than 700.degree. C., preferably up to 900.degree. C., to remove substantially all of the ammonia contained in the gas. Not only a remarkable effect upon prevention of environmental pollution but also a great improvement of energy efficiency, as compared with the conventional process, can be obtained.

A continuous reactor for viscous materials that give off volatile matter during operation has two rows of agitation rotors mounted staggeredly and with a phase angle of 90.degree. to each other on a parallel pair of shafts. Each of the agitation rotors consists of a pair of annular brackets arranged symmetrically across the axis of one shaft in a figure eight pattern, and a pair of scraper plates attached edgewise to the free ends of the brackets, one for each, at right angles to the brackets and in parallel with the shaft. The shafts are spaced apart so that the rotors on each shaft can revolve with their free ends passing close by the other shaft as well as part of the surrounding wall of the casing.
