Trailer hitch assembly

A weight measuring hitch ball assembly is described. The assembly can include a hitch ball having a ball and a lower portion. The assembly can also include a body portion defining a hitch ball opening that slidably receives the lower portion of the hitch ball. The assembly can further include a load measurement device operably associated with the body portion and the hitch ball to determine a magnitude of a force acting on the hitch ball. Additionally, the assembly can include a hitch mount interface configured to interface with an attachment structure that facilitates coupling the weight measuring hitch ball assembly to a tow vehicle.

Various removable tie-down anchor apparatuses and associated methods are described. In one example, a safety chain anchor apparatus can include a body member having an aperture and a latching member operable to be inserted into an elongate slot of the receiver, and a locking member movably coupled to an outside portion of the body member that allows the locking member to be in: an interference position that obstructs a portion of the aperture when the latching member is in the unlatched orientation, and an unobstructed position that substantially exposes the aperture when the latching member is in the latched orientation.

Removable tie-down anchor apparatus systems and methods

A weight measuring hitch ball assembly is described. The assembly can include a hitch ball and a body portion having an opening that slidably receives a lower portion of the hitch ball. Additionally, the assembly can include a retention coupling operable with the hitch ball and the body portion to secure the hitch ball to the body portion. The retention coupling can have a retention protrusion and a retention wall defining at least a portion of a retention opening operable to receive at least a portion of the retention protrusion therein. With the retention protrusion extending into the retention opening, the retention wall can provide a mechanical barrier to the retention protrusion that prevents removal of the hitch ball from the hitch ball opening, while allowing slidable movement of the hitch ball within the hitch ball opening sufficient to determine a magnitude of the force acting on the hitch ball.

A load measuring hitch assembly is described. The assembly can include a body portion operable to facilitate coupling the load measuring hitch assembly to a tow vehicle. Additionally, the assembly can include a hitch ball coupled to the body portion. The hitch ball can include a ball operable to facilitate coupling the load measuring hitch assembly to a trailer. The hitch ball can also include a lower portion coupled to the body portion in a fixed relationship. The hitch ball can further include an instrument portion free to deflect due to at least one of a vertical or a horizontal force acting on the ball. In addition, the hitch ball can include one or more force sensors operably coupled to the instrument portion to measure a force on the instrument portion in at least one measurement axis, thereby facilitating determining a magnitude of the at least one of the vertical or the horizontal force acting on the ball.

Load measuring hitch assembly for measuring loads applied by a trailer on a tow vehicle

Load measuring hitch assemblies are disclosed and described. In one embodiment, the assembly can include a body portion operable to facilitate coupling the load measuring hitch assembly to a tow vehicle. The assembly can also include at least one load cell operable to measure force in at least one measurement axis. Additionally, the assembly can include a ball portion having a ball operable to facilitate coupling the load measuring hitch assembly to a trailer. The ball portion and the body portion can be coupled to one another via the at least one load cell and a pin slot joint. The pin slot joint can provide relative motion between the ball portion and the body portion in a rotational degree of freedom about a first axis and a translational degree of freedom along a second axis. The first and second axes can be orthogonal to one another. The rotational and translational degrees of freedom between the ball portion and the body portion can facilitate transfer of a force to the at least one load cell in the at least one measurement axis, thereby facilitating determining a magnitude of at least one of a vertical or a horizontal force acting on the ball.

A weight measuring hitch ball assembly is described. The assembly can include a hitch ball having a ball and a lower portion. The assembly can also include a body portion defining a hitch ball opening that slidably receives the lower portion of the hitch ball. The assembly can further include a load measurement device operably associated with the body portion and the hitch ball to determine a magnitude of a force acting on the hitch ball. Additionally, the assembly can include a retention coupling operable with the hitch ball and the body portion to secure the hitch ball to the body portion. The retention coupling can have a retention protrusion and a retention wall defining at least a portion of a retention opening operable to receive at least a portion of the retention protrusion therein. With the retention protrusion extending into the retention opening, the retention wall can provide a mechanical barrier to the retention protrusion that prevents removal of the hitch ball from the hitch ball opening. The retention opening can be configured to facilitate slidable movement of the hitch ball within the hitch ball opening sufficient to determine the magnitude of the force acting on the hitch ball.

A weight distributing trailer hitch and associated method are described. The weight distributing trailer hitch can include a hitch portion for interfacing with a hitch receiver associated with a vehicle. The weight distributing trailer hitch can also include a ball portion to facilitate coupling with a tongue of a trailer. In one embodiment, the weight distributing trailer hitch can further include a spring bar vertically pivotal relative to the hitch portion, and an adjustment mechanism actuatable to selectively adjust a tilt angle of the spring bar relative to the hitch portion to vary preload on the spring bar and adjustably distribute weight of the trailer relative to the vehicle. In another embodiment, the weight distributing trailer hitch can further include a spring bar for distributing weight of the trailer relative to the vehicle, and a load measurement device to determine a magnitude of a downward force on the hitch ball.

Weight distributing trailer hitch

A spring bar coupling device is described for coupling a spring bar of a weight distributing trailer hitch to a trailer frame. The spring bar coupling device can include a spring bar support operable to interface with and support a spring bar of a weight distributing trailer hitch. The spring bar support can have a vertical support arm having a first coupler opening, and a lower spring bar stop extending from the vertical support arm to provide a lower interface for the spring bar. The spring bar coupling device can also include a channel bracket having at least two opposing walls defining a vertically oriented channel operable to receive the vertical support arm, and a second coupler opening in at least one of the two walls. The first and second coupler openings can be configured to be aligned with one another at a first coupling location when the vertical support arm is located at least partially within the vertically oriented channel. In addition, the spring bar coupling device can include at least one coupler operable to extend into the first and second coupler openings to couple the spring bar support to the channel bracket.
