Platooning vehicles can result in operational cost savings. Disclosed is a method of apportioning costs that are incurred/saved as a result of platooning vehicles, as well as assigning penalties for unfair platoon participation. For example, platooning history of a vehicle can be tracked, and if that vehicle acts too often as a trailing vehicle in a series of platoons then a penalty might be assigned to that vehicle. Also disclosed is a technique for operating a platoon in the presence of external factors such as municipal regulations, merging traffic, emergency vehicles, etc.

Method and apparatus for platooning of vehicles

Methods for extending a range of a vehicle are disclosed and include receiving a first data, the first data being indicative of a distance of the vehicle from a target destination, receiving a second data, the second data being indicative of a level of potential energy of an energy source for a power plant of the vehicle, receiving an operating parameter indicative of estimated future energy usage of the power plant, estimating, by a processor, an expected range of the vehicle based on the second data and the estimated future energy usage of the power plant, and adjusting a performance parameter of the power plant to extend an actual range of the vehicle when the estimated expected range is less than the distance of the vehicle from the target destination are disclosed. Systems for extending the range of the vehicle are also disclosed.

Systems and methods for extending vehicle range to maximize operation distance

Methods and systems, using a controller (), for performing de-rate operation of an engine () is disclosed. Controller () includes a de-rate condition detection unit (), an operational parameter adjustment unit (), and a de-rate condition monitoring unit (). De-rate condition detection unit () detects a low fuel condition based on a current delivery pressure level of the engine () detected at least one of: in a fuel tank () and along an inlet fuel rail () connecting the fuel tank () to the engine (). Operational parameter adjustment unit () performs the de-rate operation on the engine () by adjusting one or more operational parameters related to an engine () load based on the detected low fuel condition. De-rate condition monitoring unit () monitors the detected low fuel condition for a predetermined time period in response to the operational parameter adjustment performed by operational parameter adjustment unit ().

Systems and methods for performing engine de-rate control operation of a vehicle

A fuel system controller obtains fuel burn data from an engine control module (ECM). The fuel system controller also obtains location data from a telematics control module, such as GPS location data identifying the location of a vehicle. The fuel system controller determines the vehicle's base location based on the location data, and determines how far the vehicle can travel based on the fuel burn data. The fuel system controller determines how many fueling stations are with a threshold distance of the determined distance to empty. The fuel system controller can use that data to identify which, and how many, fueling stations are within a threshold distance of the determined distance to empty. The fuel system controller can provide a fueling warning indication based on the number of fueling stations that are within the determined distance to empty.

Energy management system and method

A system includes an internal combustion engine producing exhaust gases as a byproduct of operation and an aftertreatment system that treats the exhaust gases. The system further includes a controller that is structured to functionally execute operations to enhance the temperature of the aftertreatment system. The controller includes an operating condition monitoring module that interprets a temperature value at a position upstream of a catalyst positioned in the aftertreatment system. The controller further includes an operating condition management module that interprets a threshold temperature value, and an engine management module that provides an engine operation command to continue engine operation in response to the temperature value being at least equal to the threshold temperature value.

Disclosed are methods, systems, and computer-readable mediums for managing batteries of a fleet of vehicles. A computing device includes one or more processors configured to receive first battery data related to a first battery of a first vehicle, where the first vehicle is part of the fleet of vehicles, and compare the first battery data to fleet battery data related to one or more other batteries of vehicles in the fleet of vehicles. Based on the comparison a second vehicle in the fleet is determined in which to switch the first battery to improve battery life of the batteries of the fleet.

A system and method are disclosed for controlling a power split in a hybrid powertrain having an engine and a motor. According to at least one aspect of the present disclosure, the method includes selecting a displaced fuel consumption value for the engine based on a quantity of available reclaimed energy in a battery, where the displaced fuel consumption value favors using the quantity of available reclaimed energy at relatively high load conditions, operating the engine at a condition based on the displaced fuel consumption value to generate engine power to meet at least a portion of a power demand, and operating the motor to generate motor power sufficient to supply a remaining power demand not met by the engine power. The system includes a controller configured to perform the operations of the method.

Method of power split for hybrid powertrain

Diesel electric hybrid powertrains and methods of operating and testing such powertrains are disclosed. Certain exemplary embodiments comprise test and certification methods in which a controller operates a diesel engine alone, an integrated motor/generator alone, or both the diesel engine and the motor/generator to provide brake torque at a common output shaft according to predetermined duty cycle criteria. Emissions are measured based upon criteria accounting for the effects of regenerative braking, engine shut off, and other operational modes unique to hybrid powertrains. Further exemplary embodiments comprise hybrid powertrain systems and methods of operating the same meeting performance and emissions requirements including respective limits on NOx, hydrocarbon, particulate matter, CO, and COwithout reliance conventional emissions reduction devices or techniques.

A method for controlling aftertreatment regeneration for a system having a hybrid powertrain is described. The method includes determining that an engine aftertreatment regeneration is indicated when a regeneration request index exceeds a first threshold. The method includes determining an acceptable battery usage amount based on a current battery state of charge (SOC) and a minimum battery SOC. The method further includes determining a battery usage amount for an engine aftertreatment regeneration operation. The method includes initiating an engine aftertreatment regeneration when the battery usage amount is less than or equal to the acceptable battery usage amount.

Control of aftertreatment regeneration in a hybrid powered vehicle

A system and method for controlling air flow in an engine system. In one embodiment, the system includes an engine, a turbocharger coupled to the engine, and a compressor bypass valve coupled to the turbocharger and to the engine. The compressor bypass valve includes a mechanism that allows the compressor bypass valve to be closed by default and allows the compressor bypass valve to be actuated passively when acted upon by a boost pressure when the boost pressure increases above a predefined pressure threshold. According to the system and method disclosed herein, the compressor bypass valve is passive, and thus controls air flow to the engine without requiring active control circuitry or logic.

A system includes a hybrid drive system having an internal combustion engine and a non-combustion motive power source. The system includes an energy storage system and a controller. The controller is structured to functionally execute operations to improve an efficiency of they hybrid drive system. The controller interprets duty cycle data, a boundary condition, and an optimization criterion. The controller further elects a load response operating condition in response to the duty cycle data, the boundary condition, and the optimization criterion. The controller adjusts the operation of the engine and/or the motive power source in response to the elected load response operating condition.

A method includes interpreting a powertrain load variation amplitude and an internal combustion engine output profile. The method further includes determining an engine output differential in response to the powertrain load variation amplitude and the internal combustion engine output profile.
