Some embodiments provide a method for identifying one or more entrances to a point of interest or commercial entity (e.g., a shopping mall, a store, a business, etc.) using crowd sourced data received from a set of mobile devices over a specific period of time. The method identifies one or more points of entry to an enclosed area (e.g., a parking garage) associated with a point of interest (POI), as well as one or more points of entry to a building associated with the POI (e.g., a museum). When a user requests for directions to a particular POI, a navigation application of some embodiments uses these points of entry as the real driving and walking destinations when calculating and displaying a route to the particular POI.

Systems and methods for preparing and presenting schematic maps, which are maps that present information in a format that presents only information that is most relevant to a given situation in order to provide a simple and clear representation sufficient to aid a user in guidance or orientation. The schematic maps as described herein can be formatted based on the attributes of a display on which they are presented so that the map layout and presentation can be optimized for the particular display. The schematic maps can be 'distorted' to better illustrate important maps areas in greater detail and using a relatively larger display area while deemphasizing less important map areas by illustrating them in less detail and using a relatively smaller display area, and thus the schematic maps can be devoid of adherence to a particular scale.

The present technology relates to serving geodata based on location of a requesting device. More specifically, the technology efficiently services requests for geodata, e.g., map data, by directing requests to a server that stores a shard of an entire database of geodata. A request for geodata includes an unencrypted header having a location of a device making the request for geodata. The present technology relates the location to a shard storing data relevant to the location.
