An infrared detection camera for the inspection of coated substrates. A corrosion sensing instrument is handheld, portable, battery powered, compact and lightweight. The camera performs nondestructive, real time imaging of corrosion and defects beneath painted metal or plastics or composite surfaces. The device includes a user-friendly computer interface for real time imaging and image storage capability and is typically used for detecting early stage corrosion beneath painted aircraft aluminum surfaces. The handheld device has a front 'open air' imaging port which is designed to be placed in soft contact against the painted surface to be inspected by the instrument. The device includes an infrared camera and infrared lighting to capture an image of the surface. The captured image is transferred to a computer and analyzed to locate imperfections below a coating on a surface.

A composition for a microtexture hydrophobic or superhydrophobic coating. The microtexture coating includes a coating layer disposed on a substrate with hydrophobic or superhydrophobic particles dispersed on top of or partially embedded in the coating layer to form an outer layer. The outer layer exhibits water repellant properties. Use of the microtexture coating permits large scale, durable hydrophobic or superhydrophobic coating applications. A method of applying a coating to a substrate creating a hydrophobic or superhydrophobic surface that includes applying a polymer material or an adhesive material to the substrate creating a polymer coating layer having a top surface; initially curing the applied coating layer for a specified amount of time allowing the coating layer to partially cure; and applying a solution, at a specified velocity, containing hydrophobic particles or superhydrophobic particles on top of the partially cured coating layer.

Composition and method for a microtexture hydrophobic or superhydrophobic coating

A method and system for ultrasonic testing of adhesion within a sample, which provides ultrasonic bursts of different frequencies to the sample and maintains a predetermined phase difference between echoes returned from the sample and representative reference signals of the bursts supplied to the sample until a spectrum of the phase differences versus frequency is obtained and from which properties of the adhesion at an interface reflecting the echoes are derivable.

Method for the evaluation of adhesive bond strength via swept-frequency ultrasonic phase measurements

A method of forming a spectral selective coating is disclosed. The method may include providing particles on a substrate, wherein the particles include submicron particles. The method may farther include sintering the particles under atmospheric pressure to form a sintered layer an the substrate and texturing the sintered layer to provide a submicron surface roughness height on the sintered layer.

Method of forming a spectral selective coating

A method for the replication of a textured surface of a master is disclosed, in which the textured surface of the master is comprised of micron-scale cones having nano- or micro-scale surface features. Alternatively, the master may be comprised of micron-scale structures, nano-scale structures, and micron scale structures having nano-scale surface features. Replication can be achieved through a molding or embossing technique. Using these technique, the textured surface of the master is faithfully replicated onto the surface of the replica. A number of representative materials and additional processing steps are also disclosed. The replicated texture exhibits many useful properties, including enhanced hydrophobicity and reduced light reflection properties, making the disclosed method a simple and attractive alternative to existing texturing techniques.

Micro-structure and nano-structure replication methods and article of manufacture

The surface of a material is textured and by exposing the surface to pulses from an ultrafast laser. The laser treatment causes pillars to form on the treated surface. These pillars provide for greater light absorption. Texturing and crystallization can be carried out as a single step process. The crystallization of the material provides for higher electric conductivity and changes in optical and electronic properties of the material. The method may be performed in vacuum or a gaseous environment. The gaseous environment may aid in texturing and/or modifying physical and chemical properties of the surfaces. This method may be used on various material surfaces, such as semiconductors, metals and their alloys, ceramics, polymers, glasses, composites, as well as crystalline, nanocrystalline, polycrystalline, microcrystalline, and amorphous phases.

Systems and methods of laser texturing of material surfaces and their applications

The surface of a material is textured and crystallized in a single step by exposing the surface to pulses from an ultrafast laser. The laser treatment causes pillars to form on the treated surface. These pillars provide for greater light absorption. The crystallization of the material provides for higher electric conductivity and changes in optical properties of the material. The method may be performed in a gaseous environment, so that laser assisted chemical etching will aid in the texturing of the surface. This method may be used on various material surfaces, such as semiconductors, metals, ceramics, polymers, and glasses.

Systems and methods of laser texturing and crystallization of material surfaces

An electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material includes a matrix of a dielectric or partially conducting polymer, such as foamed polystyrene, with carbon nanotubes or other nanostructures dispersed therein in sufficient concentration to make the material electrically conducting. The composite is formed by dispersing the nanotube material in a solvent in which the dielectric or partially conducting polymer is soluble and mixing the resulting suspension with the dielectric or partially conducting polymer. A foaming agent can be added to produce a lightweight foamed material. An organometallic compound can be added to enhance the conductivity further by decomposition into a metal phase.

Conducting nanotubes or nanostructures based composites, method of making them and applications

A method of and apparatus for forming chamfers in an orifice of a workpiece. The orifice has an axis, which extends between a first surface and second surface of the workpiece, where the first and second surfaces are parallel to each other. The chamfers are disposed between the first surface and the second surface. The method includes forming an orifice in a workpiece with a source of non-collimated light directed at the workpiece at a predetermined first time interval, and forming a chamfer with a source of collimated light at a second time interval simultaneously with the first time interval. The apparatus includes at least a source of collimated and non-collimated light, a collimated light filter, and a non-collimated light generating arrangement, and at least one shutter and at least one iris that direct collimated and non-collimated light at the workpiece to form the orifice. The apparatus is configured such that the orifice has a surface roughness of between approximately 0.05 micron and approximately 0.13 micron and an orifice coefficient of greater than approximately 0.6.

Method and apparatus to generate orifice disk entry geometry

The present invention provides a &ldquo;solid&rdquo; diamond, i.e. greater than 5&mgr; thick, electron emitter that has been &ldquo;machined&rdquo; using non-contact techniques to a point having a radius of less than about 100&mgr;, preferably below about 10&mgr; and most preferably between about 3 angstroms and about 3&mgr;. The solid diamond electron emitters of the present invention can perform, even at these small radii, as multi-point emitters depending upon the radius and roughness of the pointed tip and can be used in arrays to obtain relatively large area field emitters for applications where such larger field emissions are necessary. Production of the solid diamond emitters of the present invention is preferably accomplished using non-contact electron or ion beam machining techniques. Residual gas analyzers (RGA) and field emitter extractor gauge analyzers (FERGA) that use the solid diamond emitters are also described.

A frequency converting laser device includes a plurality of laser diodes each adapted to produce an output laser light beam and a plurality of optical fibers, each coupled to the output of a corresponding laser diode and including a built-in grating in the optical fiber arranged so as to provide a beam having a specific wavelength and to reflect a small portion of such beam back into the laser diode while transmitting the beam so that the laser diode will produce a beam of that wavelength. The device further includes frequency converting structure adapted to receive the transmitted beams of laser light and to change the frequency of each input beam to produce output beams at desired frequencies.
