The invention provides methods for managing livestock for breeding or production based on one or more measurements of mitochondrial function. Measurement of mitochondrial function may also be correlated with a calculated or known feed efficiency of livestock animals to yield a predicted feed efficiency for the animal. The invention overcomes deficiencies associated with phenotypic assays for predicted breeding and production value.

Categorically ranking animals for feed efficiency

A method for supplementing the levels of select amino acids in ruminants is provided. Amino acids are susceptible to microbial degradation in the rumen, where the relative susceptibility of an amino acid oligomer is determined primarily by its solubility in the rumen fluid. A method for designing and preparing microbial resistant amino acid oligomers based on relative solubility is also provided. Various compositions containing amino acids are described and shown to resist microbial degradation in ruminants.

Amino acid oligomer dietary supplement

The present invention relates to an animal feed made of an amount of cereal grain and a peptide or polypeptide expressed by a transformed organism, whereby the transformed organism can be included in the animal feed composition. The present invention also relates to a method for forming the animal feed wherein the method includes forming a transformed organism by transforming a yeast cell by inserting a nucleic acid molecule which will express a polypeptide desired for use in the animal feed.

Animal feed containing polypeptides

The present invention relates to a method for producing a treated animal feed having a comparatively higher metabolizable energy value and fewer oligosaccharides than in untreated feed, with the present method including the steps of adding an enzyme at ambient conditions to the animal feed and allowing the enzyme to hydrolyze the oligosaccharides. The present invention also relates to the resultant animal feed.
