A filter assembly (10) includes a housing (12) defining a chamber (14). A filter substrate (16) is disposed within the chamber (14) for filtering fluids passing therethrough. The housing 12 includes an inlet (22) disposed in fluid communication with the chamber (14) for allowing flow of fluid into the chamber (14). The chamber (14) defines a flow path between the inlet (22) and filter substrate (16) for perfecting fluid flow therebetween. An outlet (24) is disposed in fluid communication with the chamber (14) for allowing the flow of fluid to exit the chamber (14). A snagging element (26) is disposed within the housing (14) between the inlet (22) and the filter substrate (16) on the flow path for snagging and retaining gelatinous particulate material from the fluid prior to being filtered. A method of filtering gelatinous material from a flow of fluid includes the steps of snagging gelatinous material from the flowing fluid and then passing the fluid through a filter.

Fluid filter assembly including gel removing barbs

A filter assembly (10) includes a hollow housing (12) having a length and first and second ends (14,16). A membrane (22) contained within and extending along the length of the housing (12) separates the housing (12) into first and second chambers (24,26). An inlet (32) is proximate to the first end (14) and is in fluid communication with the first chamber (24). An outlet (34) is proximate to the second end (16) and is in fluid communication with the second chamber (26) for allowing a flow of fluid from the second chamber (26). The membrane (22) is air permeable when dry and air impermeable when wet whereby a wetting fluid entering the first chamber (24) at the first end of the housing (12) forces air from the first and second chambers (24,26) along the length of the membrane (22) and out of the outlet (34) as the fluid wets the membrane (22) thereby de-airing the first and second chambers (24,26) from one end to the other end along the length of the membrane (22) on both sides thereof.

Fluid filter assembly

A disposable filter device having a plastic housing with inlet and outlet chambers separated by a filter disc sealed within the housing, the housing being readily disassemblable after use to remove the filter disc for identification or analysis of the material filtered from the fluid.

Filter device

The filter device has a housing with elongated top and bottom walls and side walls which taper inwardly from top to bottom. The top wall has extending downwardly therefrom into the housing a generally flat filter membrane support with a quadrangular periphery, a pair of filter membranes being disposed on opposite sides of the support and sealingly bonded to its periphery, the support having a center portion with spaced coplanar surfaces on each side to provide support for the center portion of the filter membranes. The housing is provided with an opening communicating with the space between the two filter membranes and with an opening communicating with the space between the housing and the two membranes. The bottom wall and side walls of the housing are in the form of a unitary molding of organic polymeric material open at its upper end, and the top wall and the downwardly extending filter membrane support is formed of another molding of organic polymeric material bonded about the periphery of the top wall into the open end of the outer molding. Because of such structure the device can be manufactured at relatively low cost and is compact while yet affording a large filtering area.

The filter device of this invention comprises a housing with an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber separated by a deformable microporous membrane, the outlet chamber containing a perforated membrane support surface of concave compound curvature which is spaced from the wall of the outlet chamber, the deformable membrane being in contact with and conforming to the compound curvature of the support surface when fluid flows through the membrane from the inlet chamber to the outlet chamber.

In accordance with the invention there is provided a mouth filter for use with pipettes to insure that none of the liquid or any of the bacteria in the liquid being drawn into the pipette reach the mouth of the technician applying the suction. The filter comprises an organic resin housing having a filter membrane therein which divides the housing into an inlet chamber and an exit chamber, the filter membrane being hydrophobic and constituting a bacteria barrier. The housing has tubular extensions extending from the oppositely disposed axial end walls thereof. A tube is secured to one extension of the housing and is adapted to be secured in communicating relationship with a pipette into which the liquid is to be drawn. Connected to the other housing extension is a mouthpiece for mouth-applied suction by the technician, which suction is communicated through the filter membrane and tube to the pipette.
