A sensor for measuring material properties such as the relaxation modulus of a material in situ and a method of measuring material properties of a material are disclosed. The sensor may be substantially embedded in the material, and includes a deformable driver. When actuated, the deformable driver may create a stress in the adjacent material. The movement or deformation of the driver may be measured with a sensing device, for example a strain gage mounted on a surface thereof. The stress in the adjacent material may be measured with a second sensing device, for example a pressure sensor. The measured movement and stress over a predetermined period of time may he used to determine the relaxation modulus of the material.

An apparatus for measuring stress is provided that includes a stress sensor including, in part, a sensing device configured for generating and outputting sensor measurement signals representative of a stress or a component of a stress. In one embodiment, the stress sensor permits sensing and measurement of a shear component of a stress substantially exclusive of a normal component thereof. The stress sensor may be suited for measuring stress between mated bodies, such as at an interface between the mated bodies. A method of measuring stress using the stress sensor and a rocket motor including at least one stress sensor are also provided.

A stress sensor is provided that is suited for measurement of stress between adjacent mated bodies, such as at an interface. The stress sensor permits measurement of stress, preferably a shear component of the stress substantially exclusive of the normal component. A system including the stress sensor and a method of measuring stress, especially the shear component of stress, using the sensor are also provided.

A displacement sensor for providing an indication of the position of a first body relative to a second body, the first body being displaceable relative to the second body in a displacement direction. The sensor is composed of: two magnets that are spaced from one another in the displacement direction to define therebetween a region containing a magnetic field; a magnetic field sensing element mounted in the region; and components for coupling at least one of the magnets to one of the bodies and the magnetic field sensing element to the other of the bodies to produce a relative displacement between the at least one magnet and the magnetic field sensing element in the displacement direction in response to displacement of the first body relative to the second body.
