Methods and apparatus for allocating scrambling codes to cells of a wireless network. In an example method, current scrambling code allocation information for a plurality of cells and network configuration information for a radio access network are received. A reallocation of scrambling codes to the plurality of cells is computed, based on the current scrambling code allocation information and the network configuration information, using a metaheuristic algorithm. A change in scrambling code for at least one of the plurality of cells is then triggered, based on the computed reallocation. In some embodiments, the metaheuristic algorithm is based on an objective function that comprises a summation of interference metrics for each of the plurality of cells, wherein the interference metrics depend on scrambling code allocations to the plurality of cells. In some embodiments, a simulated annealing metaheuristic is used.

The number of active antenna ports used for uplink and/or downlink MIMO transmissions to a given user are dynamically adjusted, based on user data traffic payload size per period of time, and based on RF conditions. An example method, in a radio transceiver that supports two or more MIMO transmission and reception modes, begins with evaluating channel conditions between the radio transceiver and a remote wireless device and comparing a throughput demand for the remote wireless device to a forward link capacity and/or reverse link capacity. A forward link transmission mode or a reverse link transmission mode is changed, based on the channel conditions and the throughput demand. The transmission mode is changed from a first multi-stream mode to a second multi-stream mode having fewer streams than the first multi-stream mode, despite that channel conditions for the corresponding link support the first multi-stream mode.

A system and method of controlling a wireless device communicating with a cellular communications system includes: establishing a cellular connection between the wireless device and a first cell tower; detecting, at the wireless device, a reference signal received power (RSRP) measurement of a signal broadcast by the first cell tower; increasing an RSRP threshold used by the wireless device by adding an offset value to the RSRP threshold; determining whether the detected RSRP measurement of the signal broadcast by the first cell tower falls below the increased RSRP threshold; and initiating a cellular connection with a second cell tower.
