A method is described that inserts first and second deployment descriptors into an application archive file. The first deployment descriptor conforms to a first document type definition that is defined by a standard specification. The second deployment descriptor conforms to a second document type definition that is not defined by the standard specification. The second deployment descriptor has an element that is directed to a service that is an extension to the services offered by an environment described by the standard specification. The first and second deployment descriptors provide configuration information selected from the group consisting of: a) configuration information that pertains to the application as a whole; and, b) configuration information that pertains to a web application portion of the application.

A system and method are described for performing application loading and visualization. In one embodiment, an application is accessed on a client to be deployed on the server. The client is in communication with machines having resources corresponding to the application. The application is then deployed on the server, and the deployed application on the server references a copy of the resources that already resides on the server.

According to one aspect of the invention, a method for searching for a particular type of class file and a graphical user interface for displaying the names of the class files of the particular type are provided. A first class file is searched for a particular feature. If the class file contains the feature, the name of the class file is displayed. A second class file may then be searched and displayed if it contains the same feature. The names of all class files having the feature may then be displayed in a menu on the graphical user interface. The graphical user interface may also include a window displaying a list of features. When one of the features is selected, the names of all the class files having the feature are displayed in the menu.

A system and method are described for performing updating of an application using a single file update. In one embodiment, a request from a client is received at a server to amend a deployed application by updating a single file of the application. The request is received at a deploy service of the server. The file to be update is accessed and updated to amend the application. The transaction for successful updating of the file is committed to a database.

A system and method are described for performing application cloning. In one embodiment, on a client, an application that is already deployed on a server is accessed and then cloned into another application by assigning a new name to the application. The clone application is then deployed on the server where the application and the clone application are simultaneously run.

A system and method are described for performing deployment operations according to a transaction model. In one embodiment, a request to initiate a transaction to perform a deploy service operation is received. In response to the request, the transaction is initiated at a container. The transaction is then committed to a database if the transaction is successful. The successful transaction reflects the deploy service operation being completed at the container.

A system and method are described for implementing and using a deploy system for deployment of entities. In one embodiment, a deploy service is implemented as a module on a J2EE engine to perform deployment services on a container on the J2EE engine.
